Pokémon’s Creator Talks French Inspiration, Reveals New Pokémon

In Paris, France, the Japan Expo, Europe’s largest public event related to Japanese pop culture, is currently taking place. Junichi Masuda, Game Freak founder and both director and composer for the Pokémon games, recorded a video message to mark the occasion.

After introducing himself (in French, no less!), Masuda talks about his own travels to France, and why they decided to base the new continent featured in Pokémon X and Y on France. The country, Masuda explains, with its particular attention to fashion and the aesthetics of its cuisine, was the best candidate according to the new games’ theme, which is “beauty”. Even the name of the continent itself, “Kalos”, means “beauty” in Greek.

Masuda went on to present an all-new Pokémon. Honedge, he explained, is a Steel-Ghost dual type; a floating sword which is said to contain an ancient soul. A short clip was then shown in which Honedge prepares to face off against a Golem.

Pokémon X and Y are expected to come out worldwide on October 12 for the Nintendo 3DS.
