If there’s one thing we can count on, it’s that some people are interested in seeing naked character models — this is true regardless of the game. In a sense, you could say there was a metaphorical timer starting the second that David Cage’s latest game, Beyond: Two Souls, which stars popular actress Ellen Page, was released.
You can turn that timer off.
Earlier today, a Reddit thread by dgmockingjay popped up, and it linked to screenshots of a naked Page in M-Rated Beyond. The screens appeared to be from a debug PS3, not a conventional retail system or at least one running in a debug mode. The screenshots come from an actual shower scene in the game — but the scene never shows Page’s bare breasts:
What’s different in the shots today is that the person who took them was able to change the camera angles, allowing us a fuller view of Page’s in-game model. To wit, the top of the screenshots say the game is running with a “QA menu,” (as in ‘quality assurance’) activated and that the free camera is set to “true.” With these settings, one can access a free-floating camera in a tester mode — which would allow someone to view Page as she appears in the screenshots (if that’s what they wanted, anyway).
A Kotaku source was able to access the game’s debug menu and confirmed that the nude Page model is in the game. Furthermore, they noted that while the developers seemed to have disabled a listed “cheat” functionality, presumably for progressing through the game, the free-camera functionality was left enabled. Had it been cut, they speculated, hackers would not have been able to see the full virtual nude model. Still, in case it wasn’t clear, the debug mode necessary to do this isn’t intended to be accessed by players, period. Most players won’t be able to: we don’t know about any methods to access the mode from a copy of the game running on a regular PS3 running with consumer firmware.
Of course, that someone went through the trouble to do this isn’t surprising: of course they did. What’s notable is that Quantic Dream rendered a fully nude Page even if they didn’t show it to players. Granted, having a developer include something in a game that a player might never see isn’t so uncommon.
David Cage and his studio, Quantic Dream, are known for making games that aren’t shy about including sex or nudity, often with the intent of making more mature games. Their game Fahrenheit was edited — some might say censored — of some of its sexual content for its American release. Cage’s previous title, Heavy Rain, featured a protagonist that had a fully naked character model for some of the game — and there was even a glitch that rendered said model playable.
We’ve reached out to Sony about these screenshots and will update once we hear back. For now, it’s worth noting that Beyond: Two Souls uses the same type of highly-advanced motion capture featured in the movie Avatar. Describing the process of utilising said technology to Fast Company, Cage said that Quantic Dream “gather[ed] all possible information about the actor’s body.” Additionally, earlier this year the European version of the game was modified such that “the more graphic content is shown from a different angle and not visible” according to Derek Osgood, a marketing manager at Sony.

What’s is very disappointing and sad is that she didn’t even use soap. How are gamers supposed to receive any education on proper bathing techniques from this intelligent , thought provoking , but obviously flawed sequence in the game. I hope the rest of the game is more accurate and hopefully just as challenging.
Poor Ellen.
Hahah, that shower scene is meant to do one thing, and it’s not developing the character or teaching you a game mechanic …
The shower scene is meant to clean Ellen! what else?
The world is sad and pathetic.
Yes, yes it is, but remember that “the world” includes everyone. Ellen Page for letting them create a nude model of her. The director for putting it in the game. The developers who provided the free look functionality. The player for working out how to unlock it, then recording it and posting it online. Kotaku US for reporting on it and including the footage in the article. Players who find it titillating, thus perpetuating the problems of equality in gaming. Commenters who have nothing better to do than sit idly by and complain about it all. People who remain ignorant of the fact that this even happened. Ad nauseum.
Yes, in the sense that something like this forces Sony to scramble to apologise and people get in such a tizzy about it etc.
It’s just nudity, we all need to grow up.
Can’t really blame the world for this one, they weren’t the ones that rendered Ellen Page completely naked, it was the developer of the game itself. As @shadow mention, the shower scene isn’t apart of driving story or introducing a game mechanic – it is there for the nudity to begin with.
It keeps teasing you with side boob and last second cover-ups.
Well, it’s like the whole Elder Scrolls : Oblivion fiasco. Turns out, there were rendered nudes the whole time, just hiding under the undergarments. Considering Beyond already has an extremely high rating, I doubt anything more will happen to the rating. (Oblivion went from Teen to Mature because of the debacle, though it didn’t change the Aussie rating)
That curious thing, is the model would have to have been rendered fully anyway, but the inclusion of full nipples was obviously added by developers. Was it intended to be released in the main game, and then cut? Did Ellen not want that kind of revealing footage in a game that uses her full likeness? Or was it just developers living out their own fantasies?
I would find it more strange for an artist to create a model of a naked person and leave out the parts that would usually be found on a person.
This has nothing to do with naked Ellen Page, but it’s got something to do with Beyond: Two Souls.
Apparently Sony are having a competition and anyone that bags the Platinum Trophy during October will be entered (obviously you have to be online for it to enter you). Apparently they’re giving away TV’s and stuff. I couldn’t see anything about it being restricted to a certain region, so it must be worlwide.

seriously, who is ellen page and whats so special about her?
She’s a good actor who is attractive.
She’s an ok-ish actress who is average looking.
Both of those things are subjective, but I’ll point out that the general consensus seems to disagree with you.
She was good in Hard Candy, Inception, and Super. Juno was her breakout hit and despite the film being too hip for it’s own navel, she was one of the more watchable things in it.
If you think Page is average looking, you either have rare taste in women, or you are some sort of Adonis. Or you are Internet Male.
Hard candy was good, probably the best thing she has done as an actress. (keep in mind i haven’t played the last of us yet).
She is very average looking, there is nothing about her that stands out, she’s pretty in a plain sort of way.
I’m no Adonis, i am however a significantly better than average looking man, whether that makes my taste in women more aligned to a higher attractiveness threshold… i don’t know….
but IMO lots of people give to much props to these actresses based solely on the fact that they are nerd/geek women.
IMO Summer Glau, Felicia Day and Ellen Paige are all in the same boat, Average looking women, who have some acting talent, but by far not enough for the praise they get.
Yup, going to have to go with rare taste in women and/or Internet Male.
In all seriousness, he clearly said that the 2 points you mentioned are subjective. Just like the fact that 110% of all woman on planet earth think i am more attractive then you.
I do agree with you though, she and the two other actresses you mentioned are not overly attractive. say when to compared to Mila Kunis “Now that’s just WOW!”
She isnt in Last of Us, they just copied her for the game.
She was also Treena Lahey in Trailer Park Boys, for anybody keeping score 😛
Then you’re spending an awful lot of time and effort defending your views on a page about an actress who, in your words is ‘very average’.
Your logic doesn’t add up.
I think you are confused, i’m not defending anything, i’ve replied to a thread because i’m curious why people think this chick is talented and attractive when she clearly is not.
she has odd fish shaped breasts….I would get that looked at by a doctor or something??
Why didn’t she use soap in the shower… naked yet dirty.
I’m not going to begrudge anyone their pervies (wanting to look at an attractive person is natural), but for once could we also have something added for heterosexual female gamers/homosexual male gamers?
Reminded me of Janet Leigh in Psycho – so much, I was expecting an intruder with a knife.
why is this nsfw when theres no nudity?
Just look at Quantic Dreams other games…
Hard Rain also had player nudity that could be unlocked (via a glitch). Indigo prophecy had sex/nudity that was actually in the narrative of the game. Clearly they have no hang ups about it, why do you?
