EA has shut down Mythic Entertainment, the long-time video game studio most recently responsible for Warhammer Online and the Dungeon Keeper reboot for mobile platforms.
When reached by Kotaku, EA sent over the following statement:
We are closing the EA Mythic location in Fairfax, Virginia, as we concentrate mobile development in our other studio locations. We are working with all impacted employees to provide assistance in finding new opportunities, either within EA or with other companies via an upcoming job fair.
Founded in 1995, Mythic also developed Dark Age of Camelot and a number of other online games including the popular MUD Dragon’s Gate. Its most recent release, a microtransaction-heavy remake of the classic strategy game Dungeon Keeper, was received poorly by many gamers.

I mean, it was probably all EA’s idea, including the worst of it, but still, kinda hard to feel completely sympathetic.
They did a damn good job with DAoC ….
… but yeah, the DK reboot was wrong on so many levels. If it didn’t have the monetisation, I probably would have loved it; whichever exec came up with that idea should burn in hell for eternity.
What is the bet that whoever pushed the micro-transactions is still roaming corridors of EA studios..
I disagree. The current setup is par for the course for mobile games, zero cost intro. Then cost to speed stuff up.
the game is great and the updates have been great.
Call me a horrible monster, but for some reason I feel little sympathy for any developer who makes games heavy on monetization.
To be fair, the only game that they had anything to do with that did rely on monetisation was the DK reboot. And I’d bet that that wasn’t Mythic’s decision. That kind of shit probably came from some bean counters in EA.
In fairness to them, that’s the kind of thing that almost certainly would have been forced on them by EA. It has their fingerprints all over it.
You guys are no doubt right. @lichbane
Pretty much the same thing w/ Westwood and C&C…
Great studio and then some stupid higher up exec makes a dumb call that forever taints the studio =/
I kinda figured this was coming after Warhammer Online shut down.
So, EA once again buys out a developer, forces them to be evil, then fires them when their evil plans don’t work out?
“People only hate us because we’re inclusive of homosexuals in our games!”
“You’re not playing Dungeon Keeper the right way!”
