If I were to take a guess, I’d say most players probably never make it through more than half of Skyrim’s story, if that — finishing it at all is a feat, nevermind finishing it fast.
Speedrunner DrTChops recently nailed the new world record for beating Skyrim’s story, with a playthrough clocking in at 39:32. The “any percentage” run features a lot of running, platforming, and amusingly, a lot of going around with the starting rags. And yes, dragons. It’s Skyrim!
Watch the entire thing here:
The previous world record for Skyrim’s story was held by MrWalrus, and that run took 39:41. The difference might not seem like much, but seconds can mean everything in a speedrun.
You can check out the leaderboard here, where you’ll note that the 39:32 record is actually how long it takes to beat the game without load times, and that the clock stops running when the player gets the final hit on Alduin in Sovngarde.

What are you talking about? The story is the fastest to finish because you always know where it is.
I’m still working on the record for the longest time to get through the main story with the most amount of deletes and restarts on 2 systems….
Still maintaining that 0 times completed record…
39:32 is the amount of time I spend creating my character and choosing a name.
me too
Wow! That’s fast! Wish I could get through the character creation that fast. Choosing eye colour is an important choice, it really changes the experience!
You’ve also gotta consider how the eyeball won’t have light reflecting off it once you hide your face behind a helmet.
Yeah, haha, I spend SO much time on my face then throw a helmet over it …
Which is why I like the games that have weight limitations on what you’re wearing. Like in Dragons Dogma or Dark Souls. I can run around without the helmet and gain a benefit.
Or games that remove your helmet in towns/socia hubs. Or mass effect had the option in dialogue
Just recently I did something similar, still took me near to 5 hours lol. Congratulations on the new record. Enjoy ‘guard duty’
I’d say most players probably never make it through more than half of Skyrim’s story…
Or 100% of players of the PS3 version. Did they ever end up fixing it?
Don’t think so. One or two quests are still broken on mine. and I did EVERYTHING! Took me close to 8 months.
My mum is one of the few people in the world who have actually finished the main quest.
…I can’t believe she finished it before I did.
Wait, no yes I can.
39:32
By the gods!
