Finally…
FINALLY! I can play my collection of
piratedperfectly legitimate collection of TV shows and movies out in the lounge room. And right in time for the latest season of Game of Thrones!
Oh…..wait….
Well at least NEXT season I won’t have to swap the cables in my crappy old amplifier just to watch it on my 360.
I wonder if the copy protection crap is on ps4. I’ve heard on PS3 some files would lose sound if it was a downloaded copy….
What you’re thinking of there is Cinavia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinavia
There was a process for removing Cinavia from protected movies, but not many people seemed to bother doing it.
Yeah they went one step further this time, DTS sound is no longer supported at all, so it pretty much screws and decent rip of any movie.
All sweet, the MKV files I’ve played so far are sweet!
Still not compatible with external hard drives and no local storage capabilities. *sigh*
There’s no local storage, but they say it works with external hard drives [thought I haven’t yet tried personally to confirm].
It does support external USB drives for local storage.

USB drives under 1tb I’m guessing. My Seagate 2Tb external storage drive was rejected.
FINALLY!
About damn time! No more time wasted converting them.
bee. Using PLEX via the web browser for ages. It works just fine.
Well if this works as well as i hope no more need for my PS3 ;'(
This is the biggest thing from the Sony E3 announcements in my book. HUGE!!
Why is this not included in the “Everything you need to know about Sony at E3” article?
Now all we need is an official PS4 bluetooth remote, come on Sony fucking release one already…
I know, right? The PS4 will never be a legitimate media player until it gets a remote. For crying out loud, even the PS2 had a remote!
Yep, so stupid. I use my PS3 for Netflix because of the damn remote making it so much easier. Dunno why Sony just can’t let us use the PS3 blu-ray remote, the one that also controls Sony TV’s & Amplifiers..
Does not seem to play subs on mvk files.
No sale.
Also does not support DTS sound
Support for Hi10p?
Downloaded the app, plugged in my 2tb external hard drive, and it didn’t work. The system wouldn’t allow it to be read
Thank God!! It’s about fucking time. MKV support seems too good to be true. Now I don’t have to waste countless hours converting my MKVs to MP4. Yes!
Here’s a question though: what file system does PS4 use? Is it still FAT32 like PS3 was? If so, looks like we’ll be limited to 4GB files again.
I had a play around with this Media Player earlier.
It detects PS3 Media Server and displays all the content fairly quickly.
Although a few things that irk me about it.
All video files are displayed with their file name, but if for example, you have numbered episodes, it will put 10 after 1, rather than after 9…
With audio files, they display SONG TITLE ONLY, in alphabetical order.
This makes playing a digital album from start to finish impossible, and there’s no way to change how they are displayed.
Also no FLAC or DTS support! How could they overlook this?!
And last but not least… no visualizations when playing audio. I’m really gonna miss that awesome Earth visualization from the PS3.
Hopefully these are things they will fix/add/sort out with future revisions of the application.
Currently, while usable, it’s still got nothin’ on the PS3 for media playback.
How did you get it working?
I’ve installed Universal Media Server and PS3 Media Server and it wont pick them up…
Edit: Nevermind, got it working.
Finally, welcome to 2008 everyone!
Now with dial up speed copper wire!
Its about damn time. Now add DTS 🙂 and give me a real remote. 🙂
Took em long enough! Far out I’ve been using my PS3 to play videos via USB for too long now. This is such a simple thing that should have been included from the very beginning.
For those bitching, it’s free. Either use it or don’t. Self entitled gamers, sigh. Nothing is ever good enough for some people.
SONY dropped DivX support and I discovered that you can’t play any of the supported video files from a DVD like you could with the PS3. All in all, I am glad they finally rolled out video and mp4 support, but it is still light years behind the PS3’s features. Nice to see MKV support included. The PS4 still needs a dedicated Blu Ray Remote Control and the fast scrolling feature featured on the PS3. Comprehensive subtitle support would be a great addition to
‘The PS4 Now Supports Most MKV Files’
Cheering!!! Although my TV has USB input and supports all files so when I had MKV or something that didn’t work on my PS4 I’d just watch ’em through my TV. Pretty interesting story that ????
