DICE’s all-peer-based voting panel must have had a great time hacking supermutants apart to Skeeter Davis’s End of the World, ’cause Fallout 4 took three awards home, including Game of the Year. But of course, Fallout 4 wasn’t the only big winner at the 19th DICE Awards.
In total, five games had wins in more than one category this year. They are:
Fallout 4
- Game of the Year
- Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction
- Role-Playing/Massively Multiplayer Game of the Year
Ori and the Blind Forest
- Outstanding Achievement in Animation
- Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction
- Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition
Rocket League
- DICE Sprite Award (“having disproportionate resources for development and exposure, as compared to AAA titles”)
- Sports Game of the Year
- Outstanding Achievement in Online Gameplay
Star Wars Battlefront
- Action Game of the Year
- Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design
The Witcher 3
- Outstanding Achievement in Game Design
- Outstanding Achievement in Story
- Outstanding Technical Achievement
Seven other games won in a single category:
- Forza Motorsport 6 – Racing Game of the Year
- Helldivers – Handheld Game of the Year
- Heroes of the Storm – Strategy/Simulation Game of the Year
- Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – Adventure Game of the Year
- Mortal Kombat X – Fighting Game of the Year
- Rise of the Tomb Raider – Outstanding Achievement in Character
- Super Mario Maker – Family Game of the Year
Besides recognising the above twelve games, the Academy also inducted Hideo Kojima in its Hall of Fame for his efforts to advance the gaming industry, and posthumously honored Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata with its fifth Lifetime Achievement Award.

It had to win GOTY somewhere … otherwise we wouldn’t be able to get the inevitable “GOTY Edition” with all the DLC bundled (which I’m waiting for … FU Bethesda and your $50-$70 DLC).
It didn’t need to win it for that edition to exist. There’s a GOTY edition of that awful AFL game from a few years back. Anyone that gave that GOTY was trolling.
The thought of an AFL GOTY makes me want to kick a puppy.
From outside 50 on your non-preferred? 😀
Well, I’m sure it was probably the best AFL game of that year, at least 😛
Buy the pass before 1st of march at Green man gaming and its like, 33 bucks.
The only award it deserved to win over the Witcher was for its marketing campaign.
The witcher was shit compared to fallout. A lot of people, including journalists and critics genuinely feel like fallout was their game of the year. There’s a lot of points fallout destroys the witcher on although majority opinion will always side with witcher.
There’s a reason why its a ‘majority’ opinion :^)
I feel the opposite way. Fallout 4 feels repetitive in its story and feel like its dense for the sake of shoehorning more content in. played through the witcher and the dlc twice and ive given up on fallout halfway through the story. I just cant get myself to care about fallout’s plot
after seeing all what the winners were for each category i just cant take the DICE awards as being serious… they are more worthless than the freaking Grammy’s. HotS is a good moba but its not a fucking stratergy game or Sim and in noways should it of beaten Cities Skyline. Fasllout 4 should never of won best RPG over Witcher 3 or Bloodborne. MGS is an Action game not an Adventure game and battlefront should not of won best Action game.
This list is as just as bad as Shakespear in love beating Saving Private Ryan for best picture and Mathew Mcdouchenoozle beating Leonardo DiCaprio for best actor
Not sure that they are completely worthless, as they are actually peer voted; I’m in the industry and I was invited to. That said, I’m not sure how the short lists are drawn up, because there were several categories where a) I hadn’t played any of the games in the list b) the one I wanted (Bloodborne!) was not there and c) I wasn’t allowed to simply skip the category.
That’s exactly the problem then. Peer-reviewed awards should remain the bastion of Travel and Real Estate Agents.
Maybe, but it’s not like they actually hurt anybody beyond a few comments sections.
You say its peer voted, but the winners and the nominations for the different categories make it look like that the votes didn’t matter at all and that was more like a formality. that’s why i say they are more worthless than the grammys
Lets look at the Stratergy/Simulation nominees, Cities Skyline(sim), Kerbal Space Program(sim), Grey Goo(RTS) looks fine then we have Fallout Shelter (Mobile game) and finally Heroes of the Storm (MOBA). so we have 3 that actually fit the category and then one mobile game (no other category has a mobile game in it) and then we have a game from a completely different genre. And the one that wins is the game that not even classed as a Sim/Stratergy game.
Its also amazing that legacy of the void wasnt even nominated for the Sim/Stratergy Category.
Then there is the biggest stuff up with RPG of the year With Fallout 4 winning over the Witcher3, PoE, Undertale and Bloodborne. How Fallout 4 can win over those 4 games just doesnt make any sense to me.
Battlefront winning Best Action game over Just Cause 3, Helldivers and Splatoon just screams money exchanging hands.
Why can’t fallout be rpg of the year? I liked bloodborne a lot more but I would be willing to give it to fallout. It has a fucking great hook. It oozes cool and style, the music by jeremy soule and the radio tracks are perfect, the world doesnt feel too big yet its easy to feel lost, there’s different variations in gameplay ie settlement, questing, aimless wandering. It wasnt a perfect game but neither was the witcher, neither had perfect stories but by far fallout wasnt some bloated fantasy shit fetch quest to run around writing fucking poems for dandelion. Fallout had a great story apart from the ending, which wasnt horrible.
Just going on record saying Splatoon was a better Battlefront game than Battlefront was…
Problem with peer voted awards is that they can be skewed by people voting for their mates. Maybe the Bethesda guys are very popular among the development community?
Also, only bringing this up because you made the same mistake a couple of times, and are probably not aware: http://www.elearnenglishlanguage.com/blog/english-mistakes/should-have-vs-should-of/
110% agreed. Its shit like this that makes the whole games media a complete joke.
*full disclosure: I agree DICE awards are shit; but MOBAs *do*require strategy – that being said, it *does* cheapen the rest of the sim & strategy genres awarding it to a MOBA; you may as well allow CodBlOps into the category.
There’s a demonstrable disconnect between the DICE awards and the communities & industries it targets/represents – and *that* is what makes the DICE awards shit.
Lol Fallout 4, nice joke.
Fallout 4 deserves it. Better hook than any other game and the fact it’s not that different from 3 is a PLUS. I think the Witcher deserves it as well, but neither can win everytime. Bloodborne was by far my favourite game of last year, its not going to win every fucking award and neither is the witcher so when something like fallout is named the game of the year go and jerk off to the 90 goty awards witcher has.
Explain why something like fallout 4 deserves the award over something like Splatoon. Aside from not being an RPG, it had amazing art, gameplay, multiplayer was aqesome, free dlc. And to be completely fair, ive spent as much time in Splatoon as i have fallout 4, yet im burned out on fallout 4 and dont want to touch it again – splatoon ive already firef up again a few hours this weekend.
Splatoon got good but not great reviews at launch. People like it and it’s improved, but if you’re looking at a popular consensus then it wasn’t showered in near-unconditional praise the way a game like The Witcher was. It was never likely to win.
FYI, I don’t know how Fallout won it either. It’s a good game, but the story is garbage and the characters are garbage and the graphics are garbage…. Come to think of it I’m genuinely surprised that it’s as good as it is.
Surely i’m not the only one who found Fallout 4 boring?
No there’s a few around here, me included I’ve had it since launch…
Just completed the “Unlikely Valentine” quest and then went and played more FIFA… Loved 1, 2 & 3 + NV. But 4 dunno.
Grinded my way through it like the choir it literally was just for every achievement. Already gave away the disc, didnt enjoy it anywhere near enough to purchase the DLC coming.
Only thing i can say i really enjoyed was the colourful environments.
I wouldn’t go as far as to say it was boring. To me it was just unfocused, like a collection of parts thrown together without an overarching vision.
It’s an ok game, but it didn’t blow me away.
