Metroid II: The Return Of Samus was released in 1991 for the Game Boy. Project AM2R, some six years in the making, takes that Game Boy game and makes it look, sound and play so much prettier. The fan project got its first full release today, to coincide with the series’ 30th.
It’s not the Metroid II players of the original will remember. Project AMR2 has taken the fast-paced gameplay of Metroid: Zero Mission for the Game Boy Advance, mixed it with the atmosphere of Super Metroid and incorporated a bunch of helpful new features.
- Metroid Zero Mission style gameplay
- Map system
- Updated enemy AI
- Minibosses
- New areas
- Challenging Metroid fights
- Stackable beam system
- Completely redrawn enemy and Metroid sprites
- Log system with non-intrusive narrative
- High quality soundtrack
That last bullet point isn’t kidding. I’ve had the game’s opening screen running for 20 minutes now, and I’m still digging the music.
Here’s YouTuber Gustavo Moreno giving the release a little play.
Head over to the Project AMR2 webpage now to grab a copy of the Windows version. A Linux version is coming soon.

Huzzah!
surprised it’s got this far without a C&D
I thought it already got hit with one years ago.
Downloaded it this morning. After all these years of patiently watching the blog page, I’m so stoked to finally play the game, and it’s everything I hoped for and more.
I know that Nintendo has a policy of never doing anything like this, but if they were smart, they would instantly get this guy to take the game down on the condition that he works to transfer it to 3DS or NX and make it an official release. It is seriously high enough quality to be one.
I’d pay for it if it went to 3DS
How do I get this on my vita?
How did this not get shut down?
Because I’m not a total heathen I’m not going to try to play this without a controller. What’s the best way to get the Wii U Pro controllers working with Windows 10? No program I try wants to work.
I’m using an Xbox360 controller, plugs straight into USB. The D-pad is driving me just a little bit crazy though. <_
I’m trying to figure out the best way to play it too. Keyboard is not an option, 360 haha no, Xbone has a better d-pad but not a fan of that position, GCN via USB adapter maybe but I dunno about a control stick, Logitech USB controller hahahaha no. So far the best sounding options are two sets of DK bongos, or my 360 fight stick 😛 Though the latter worked well for Guacamelee.
I bought an adaptor from Mayflash for about $20 that lets me use my Wii U pro as if it’s an Xbox 360 controller. Best $20 I’ve ever spent.
And apparently the Dual Shock 4 best-in-class program now has issues with Windows 10.
Short of grabbing the mayflash, I’m desperate here.
Oh, also, I think I heard if your PC/Laptop has bluetooth, you can connect it somehow without an adaptor. I haven’t looked into it because I don’t have bluetooth on mine.
AAAAAANNNNDDDD… it’s already been hit with a Nintendo DMCA.
