And in exhibit #77923 of headlines I didn’t think I’d be writing this week, we have this.
American football isn’t a huge sport in Australia, so it’s a safe bet that most of you wouldn’t have heard of Cassius Marsh. He’s a linebacker (or a defensive end, if you want to get technical) for the Seattle Seahwaks, a team that’s doing fairly well. The Seahawks are 5-2-1 so far, leaving them first in the West division of the National Football Conference.
But Cassius Marsh isn’t flying high. And that’s because some massive arsehole decided to swipe his Magic: The Gathering collection from a backpack in his car. And it’s not just a few boosters and a crappy duel deck, but a collection worth up to $US25,000.
Marsh really loves his Magic cards:
Who ever stole my magic collection from my LR4 last night, if you are 12 plz return it and I will give you two tickets to next home game.

All you 12s do me a huge favor and retweet my last tweet. Other than god family and football, my magic card collection is everything

Marsh told the Seattle Times that he’s been playing Magic since he was 11 and it’s an important way for him to unwind after a match. “It’s not even the money. I really enjoy playing the game,” he explained.
“To me, that’s what I do to get my mind off things sometimes. You know how people zone out sometimes? That’s how I zone out. It’s hurtful because those are one things I really care about.”
He’s not a dude with a face (or tats) that screams tapping for mana, but he loves the shit out of those Magic cards. Hell, anyone who went to the trouble to build two separate Legacy decks and four playable Modern decks with completely different archetypes isn’t mucking around.
A few people on social media have let Marsh know that they’re keeping an eye out for the cards and decks, although without knowing the precise cards or having any photos it might be difficult to track them down.
Some dickheads also took told Marsh that the theft was a sign, an indication that he should be doing something with his time other than playing with Magic cards. But the linebacker had the best response:
@jvsmitty22 I’m grown enough not to be ashamed of loving a game. I get paid to play a game I love. A grown man is the same no matter what

Hope you get your Magic cards back soon, mate.

So much respect for that last tweet, not only proudly espousing his hobby but realising football is just another game.
Shame I only found out about this because something shitty happened to him though.
Yeah. It’s lovely that he didn’t back down.
Also, holy shit at that full sleeve.
Man, this story is so adorable :3
I love this guy…
