In a move they’ve used before, the Evolution fighting game championships is selecting its ninth official game via a charity donation drive. And that’s all in good fun: it lets the fans really get behind the games they want to see most at EVO.
But there’s one contender in this year’s donation drive that’s just a little bit different: Windjammers.
The donation drives for the last official game is being run through Generosity, a charity-focused fork of the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo. The idea is pretty simple: whatever fan base donates the most money to charity gets their game on the big stage. That’s it.
So far the list is full of the usual entrants. There’s Killer Instinct, a game that has gotten regular support from its developer and a small, but dedicated, fan base. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is currently the front-runner, which isn’t wholly surprising given its history at EVO. And just behind those two games is Pokken Tournament, a virtual excuse to beat the living snot out of Pikachu in 3D.
But a couple of hundred dollars behind that is … well, a very un-EVO like game.

Other games are up for the vote as well, including Mortal Kombat XL and Nidhogg. But they’re well and truly out of contention, with a measly $US65 donated from 5 donors.
Windjammers, however, is amazingly in the running. It’s a good $US1500 behind UMvC3 right now, and that’s the way things will probably stay. But fans are already mobilising on social media to attract the attention of people with large followings (like wrestler and avid gamer Xavier Woods, who has nearly 430,000 followers and a picture of Windjammers as his Twitter banner).
But even if the current pecking order remains the same, it’s still a wonderful world where there is a realistic possibility that Windjammers could have a Sunday finals right alongside Street Fighter, Tekken 7 and Smash Bros.
The full list of games at EVO this year, incidentally, is as follows:
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
- Super Smash Bros. Wii U
- King of Fighters XIV
- Injustice 2
- Street Fighter 5
- Tekken 7
- Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2
- BlazBlue: Central Fiction
- Fan voted game

I’d much rather have ARMS there. I’d like to see the physical aspect thrown into EVO.
Alright, but does the game actually fit EVO? (Seriously don’t know)
Or is it one of these, vote in something silly for lols, things where the organisers are forced to step in?
Only thing I’ve seen on it was a few vids on Giant Bomb, and it seems like a fairly strategic, competitve game, but probably not as deep as others in the line-up.
Windjammers is pure, it’s depth knows no bounds.
I wonder if there is a way for Gerstmann to hold the title of World Champion of NFL Blitz ’99 and World Champion of Windjammers at the same time…
There’s no doubt it’s a strategic, competitive game, but a fighting game it is not. I’d rather see a game like ARMS or Mortal Kombat XL.
Is rather see Super Turbo.
