Good Old Games is having a solid sale right now, but they’re not the only ones offering bargains.
The latest Humble Bundle is all about Steam ratings: namely, only things that are “Very Positive” or better. That’s usually a good place to start, but the second tier has two crackers that should be in most people’s libraries: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Ultimate Chicken Horse, which is basically local multiplayer Mario Maker with farm animals.
Everyone knows the drill: there’s multiple tiers, with each tier having multiple price points. Buying into higher tiers gets you access to all the games and extras at the tiers underneath. Let’s begin.
Tier 1: Pay what you want (above $US1)

- RIVE
- Dungeon Souls
- Neon Chrome
[clear]
There’s nothing especially flashy at this tier, although Neon Chrome and RIVE have a pretty stellar reputations on Steam. If you like your roguelikes, Dungeon Souls would be worth the cost of a Mars Bar. But if I had to recommend one out of the three, Neon Chrome is a fun top-down shooter.

At the time of writing, the average is $US7.11 ($8.88).
- Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor GOTY Edition
- Ultimate Chicken Horse
- Oxenfree
[clear]
There’s a good enough chance that most people will enjoy two out of the three games at this tier, given the variety. If you do like narrative adventures, and don’t mind a dose of horror on the side, Oxenfree is worth the few hours’ playtime.

It’s not that type of horror game, if it’s even a horror game at all. It’s not the sort of game that Let’s Players and Twitch streamers will milk for entertaining jump scares.”]
There’s nothing to replicate the Nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor yet, and it’s worth playing for that reason alone. Ultimate Chicken Horse is also a game night favourite, especially if your group of friends have that competitive streak.
Tier 3: Pay $US10 or more to unlock

- Beat Cop
- Death Road to Canada

The value runs out a little bit here. Beat Cop looks awesome, like a pixel art modern spin on Police Quest, but Luke found it was bogged down by a timer and controls that work against each other.

On Monday, I was excited! It looked like Police Quest! By Wednesday I’d given up, because it’s not a good video game, and that’s disappointed me more than I thought it would have.”]
Death Road to Canada, on the other hand, is a light-hearted roguelike affair where you brave hordes of zombies en route to Canada. Sometimes you can do so with a dog, one that Riley says is a Very Good Doggo indeed.

In Death Road to Canada, I wanted someone who’d be fun to hang around with in a zombie apocalypse, rather than a simple zombie-clobbering machine.”]
So that’s the latest package – lot of good value from the second tier down. Also comes at a super helpful timing for me personally, because I had a friend who was saying, “Oh, I really want to play Shadow of Mordor. But only on PC.”
Well, good friend, now you can.
