The PlayStation-licensed line of Amiibo-looking toys comes by way of ThinkGeek, the merchandise outfit owned by GameStop, and are due to launch on March 23.
There are a total of seven different figures including God of War‘s Kratos, Tekken‘s Heihachi, Bloodborne‘s hunter, Wipeout‘s Feisar FX 350, LittleBigPlanet‘s Sackboy, PaRappa the Rapper and Crash Brandicoot.
Called “Totaku,” not to be confused with Kotaku or its Editor-in-Chief, Stephen Totilo, the toy line is reminiscent of Nintendo’s Amiibo with each character standings just a few inches tall and affixed to a small platform.

However, unlike Amiibo the Totaku don’t appear to have any extra NFC (near field communication) functionality, meaning you won’t be waving little Kratos over top of your PS4 Dualshock to have bonus items drop from the sky as in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Instead, they appear just to be regular old toys, although a little more detailed than most. Heihachi looks especially cool.
And then there’s PaRappa who looks like someone hot-glued an eraser to part of a pencil case.
Each of the figures is currently priced at $US10 ($13), slightly less than most Amiibo. There’s no word yet on whether ThinkGeek plans to add more characters to the Totaku collection or what Sony’s involvement is beyond simply licensing them under an anagram for our site.

Everybody wanna be nintendo
Wow, I never realised that every miniature figurine ever has actually been copying Nintendo Amiibos this whole time. They even had the gall to scry into the future and use that design before Nintendo even started making them. The noive of ’em. /sarcasm
As every second article from this blogger/journalist is about Nintendo is say they’re quite the fan boy.
Yes, According to the author of this article. Nintendo invented everything.
Credit where credit’s due: the totem/otaku portmanteau gets a thumbs up from me.
While we’re talking about it, where does the “K” in Kotaku come from?
From ko- meaning small in size.
That’s… actually quite sensible and something I could have found out if I did a small amount of research. For some reason I thought it was going to be something more obscure than that.
Thank you Zombie Jesus
So… Not actually like Amiibo at all, then? Just miniature figurines similar to all the other ones that have been being manufactured for decades, if not centuries?
I like how you’re so upset about this that you had to communicate that to everyone. Ta for the chuckle.
Just preordered the bloodborne one from eb.
But Totaku isn’t an anagram of Kotaku? I can’t think of any anagram for the word Kotaku. It’s a similar sounding word, but not an anagram.
All according to totaku
That’s not the only hot gluing parappa is gonna get
Wow….
It would appear that some folks think reminiscent means copied.
That or show me on doll where the Amibos touched you!!
Exactly. Nintendo been pumping out Amiibo with great success and now another company is releasing some little statuettes too. Totally not related though. Just a complete coincidence.
I think that’s the point. These don’t have any NFC capabilities so where is the comparison?
Sega made imatures in the 90’s so then did Nintendo copy them?
They’re miniatures they have been around for decades, no one is copying any one in particular. It’s just the lack of any functionality like the amibos have does put it in a different category.
to say it has no connection whatsoever to Nintendo’s Amiibo success though is a stretch. It’s obvious Sony’s been looking over the fence and wants some of that pie. Nothing wrong with that of course, but “reminiscent” all the way. Hell, everything successful Nintendo’s ever done has been copied not long thereafter by competitors.
Ethan Gach confirmed for not knowing what an anagram is.
lmao btw totaku is not an anagram for Kotaku. its sound similar sure but it is definitely not an anagram.
I really like them but the price turns me off. They’re cheaper than amiibo in the US, but they’re more expensive than amiibo here?
