Didn’t like that stupid Mercedes DLC for Mario Kart 8? Please understand. Nintendo had something cooler coming later.
A listing on the company’s UK page has revealed two upcoming DLC packs for the game that add Link, Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach and Animal Crossing characters as racers, let you choose an F-Zero car and bring new tracks, including ones set in the worlds of Zelda and Animal Crossing.
Here’s the full run-down:
Each Add On Content pack will contain two new cups, each with four courses, which, in total, increases the number of available courses by 50 percent. The Add On Content packs include classics like Wario’s Gold Mine from Mario Kart Wii, as well as new courses, some taking place in the worlds of The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing. New vehicles will also arrive with each pack, including the Blue Falcon kart representing the F-Zero franchise in the first AOC pack.
Mario Kart 8 Pack 1 – Released: November 2014
Pack 1 includes:
3 Characters: Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach, Link

8 Courses
Mario Kart 8 Pack 2 – Released: May 2015

As a bonus for purchasing both packs – as a bundle or separately – you can get eight different-coloured Yoshis and eight different-coloured Shy Guys that can be used right away.

No no no no no no no no no.
Keep it classic ffs. > _
Yeah. This is supposed to be Mario Kart, not Super Smash Kart.
I feel like this fits though. Just like Diddy who appeared in some of the other games. Nintendo first party characters with a cartoonish aesthetic. (I don’t think I’d like to see Metroid characters though.) I wouldn’t be opposed to a Pikmin track! *strokes beard* MAKE THAT HAPPEN, NINTY.
ZERO SUIT SAMUS AND RIDLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I could rant on all day. But i wont.
This is just plain wrong.
Edited for moderation.
Does it really matter at the end of the day, it is a Kart racing game, Not a Mario game.
IMO you could fill the character slots with death row inmates and the game would still be fun.
Nothing “matters” at the end of the day. Doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to not like it.
You can choose whether or not to dislike going in the opposite direction of not liking something you would not like.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?
What?
Noooo, my brain!
Now to spend the next hour interpreting the meaning of that statement…
You can always not download the DLC and keep it classic 🙂
you know you don’t have to buy it, right?
Please, please, please let one of the new tracks be Block Fort!
I want these new tracks! NEW TRACKS!
No Diddy though? WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME, DIDDY?
With any luck it will he will be in the 3rd DLC pack 😛
I do have concerns that this’ll fragment the amount of players though. (Friends with new maps can’t play with friends without DLC, etc.) At the same time. I’d buy a disc with new courses any day. 😀
*Rumour alert* apparently he’s not in the Wii U game because Diddy Kong Racing 2 is being developed by Monster Games. Makes a whole load of sense, considering that every other iteration of Mario characters under the sun is coming to this game!

I have seen this before and am really hoping it’s true. But I’m not holding my breath. Wonder if they could recapture the Rare glory days. Those were great.
They just need that island hub for me to mess around in and I’d be happy!
I played Diddy Kong Racing when I was 6, and I highly doubt I actually completed many of the races…
Mario is still holding a grudge since N64 days where he made his own game.
Hold on, as I recall mario kart 8 is 1 of the games that supports amiibos. Omg, 4 famous mercenaries racing including the 1 & only captain falcon. *he is hoping that upcoming dlc other famous nintendo characters & items including cucoos & the egg plant bomb*
And this is why Nintendo is failing. For non Nintendo fanatics, this stuff just looks like them recycling the same tired characters they’ve had going round since the 1980s. Why would anyone not already obsessed with Nintendo actually want to buy this?
Because it’s good fun? There’s new tracks – it’s just like buying new maps for any other game.
People obsessed with Nintendo make up a pretty large portion of the Wii U install base. The Wii U has not been a casual console craze like the original Wii. Nintendo is going to make buckets of money from this.
That was sort of my point.
Man, what a dick… why are some people so eager to say that “Nintendo is failing” at every opportunity? That company has had more success and has more money in the bank than most Fortune 500 companies.
Why am I a dick? For expressing an opinion you don’t like?
I’m actually not invested in the console wars at all (PC master race etc etc), but I don’t think many people could seriously disagree with the proposition that Ninty has gone from a major player in the console wars to a bit player while Sony and MS ride off into the sunset with insane sales. Hell, Kotaku itself has had plenty of articles discussing problems at Nintendo.
I actually have a soft spot for Nintendo and grew up on SNES, N64 and Gamecube. My post was motivated by the fact that I hate to see them recycling the same tired stuff over and over again instead of taking some risks. Risks made Nintendo great.
So trying something they’ve never done before is recycling the same tired stuff over and over again? Having new characters in Mario Kart is a big deal. More crossover stuff. And it’s definitely a risk looking at some of the comments here.
Ok, Kotaku comment voting is officially ridiculous.
Contents of post:
– Nintendo is failing: perhaps exaggerated, but they aren’t travelling too well lately
– Nintendo fanatics like this stuff: obviously true
– to outsiders this looks like Nintendo recycling the same characters who have been going around for ages: obviously true
– it is hard to see why people not obsessed with Nintendo would be interested in this: statement of opinion
Result: epic downvotes. Pathetic.
A downvote IMO is a no or a disagreement not an insult. Why do you even care if people don’t agree with you?
Mostly because it means I go to moderation hell here – if you get something like a -5 comment then all of your comments go to moderation for a while – not sure how long but it seems like weeks.
I don’t think it’s what you’re trying to say, but how you’re saying it.
I for one am really excited for the new tracks. And the new characters should be interesting, more kart combinations.
Those who like Nintendo will probably buy this, yes, but even people who don’t are rather excited for this. It’s something new and also, Animal crossing has only been around since the 2000’s.
Mario kart is just a fun game, whether you’re a Nintendo fan or not. I think that’s part of what people are disagreeing with.
Also, on the Nintendo is failing. It’s not. It’s not doing as well as it could, but it’s certainly on the right track. Not to mention they have plenty of money to keep going. People are sick of the NIntendo is crap and NIntendo is failing that we have been hearing since the Gamecube.
I’m fairly new to nintendo and I’m genuinely keen for this. Sounds like fun to me. Meeeoooow.
About f***ing time!
OMG
PHUCK YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yay, Isabelle! Yay new tracks!
Brilliant. I’ve always wanted them to change it from Mario Kart to Nintendo Kart where they bring in characters and track themes from their other games, so this is a step in the right direction.
I’m in for this. That six month wait between packs is a bit painful.
The fact that they are stretching out to pull in some of their other franchises makes me excited. I’m really interested in the F-Zero track they use and if it will be a previous one (obviously works easily with the zero-gravity stuff.
Day 1 download.
Excite bike track in the pics!
I’m hyped for this completely. New characters bringing new tracks/locations. Hopefully they will do some proper battle areanas later on too.
Man, screw the purists who are like “Oh it should be ONLY Mario characters”, more is always better and 16 more tracks by mid next year… awesome! Gimme gimme.
I’m gobsmacked by the negativity in this comments section. I know I shouldn’t be, this being the internet and all, but wow.
I know, right? Especially since it’s DLC! Completely optional, won’t change a thing if you don’t want it… People are so weird about their irrationality.
Well it kind of does change things. For one it represents a change in direction for the series, which could (and probably will) be seen in further titles down the track. Secondly, just talking from the view of a collector/preservationist, it changes things too. The copy I have is now “incomplete”. Especially since these have new tracks in them, not just new characters. I’ve never been a fan of this kind of “core” DLC, stuff beyond simple cosmetic things like new costumes that don’t really affect the game at all. My copy of Super Mario Kart still plays now exactly as it did 20 years ago – if this kind of thing was in the Wii version of Mario Kart and either I hadn’t already bought it or my console exploded for whatever reason, that content would now be lost to me forever. I don’t like the thought of that. I’d be open to grabbing it in disc form like I could with New Super Luigi U, but I have my doubts about that happening here.
But I’ll admit I’m probably coming into it a bit jaded already – the game felt rushed and unfinished as it was, some of the things in the recent update like actually having the track map up on the screen (especially in multiplayer) are basic features that should have been there from the start. So I’m already kind of disappointed with how things have been going with this game to begin with, I’ve come to expect better from Nintendo.
You felt MK8 was rushed and unfinished? I couldn’t disagree more. It feels to me like it’s been polished and perfected, especially the mechanics. I guess I would say the battle mode feels rushed but I don’t think the main game does at all.
I didn’t at first, the core of the game is pretty solid. But the more I played it the more I found all sorts of little things that were wrong with it, either done weirdly or features that were seen in previous entries but not present here for no apparent reason. It’s disappointing.
“wrong with it” or didn’t like? pesonally i like having the map on the pad.
It’s not so great when you’re playing with other people. And aren’t the one with the gamepad.
true.
Wii U Pro Controllers all the way, since MK8 came out I’ve left my Gamepad in a drawer with the power connected, not to say I don’t like it, Deus Ex was fucking amazing with the gamepad. Also apart from the Battle mode MK8 is probably one of the most solid experiences I’ve had in a long time, especially now we live in the age of early access alphas and half-finished, “to be patched” EA games.
That though, is a problem endemic to the WiiU hardware rather than a problem with the software
@n0neoftheab0ve It really isn’t. There’s no reason for the map not to have been placed on the TV during multiplayer in the first place, instead they had to go and patch that feature in.
@twogirlsoneleica Actually yeah, what happens to the map when you play without the gamepad? Prior to the patch anyway. Or does it even let you play without the gamepad? I can’t remember if we tried, could be thinking of another game where we couldn’t play without it.
@shadowwarrior404
Personally I’ve become used to the Wiimote and Nunchuk. But with the current setup everyone gets the controls they want.
It’ll only become the norm if people by the DLC. And if people buy the DLC, it means people want it.
Wow, they are really committing to this. Nice to see Nintendo! Amd we only need to wait until November for the first pack to hit too. Nice.
Some more info. Apparently, these packs cost 7 GBP each.
That’ll probably translate to around $10 US and $45 AUD.
Edit: Will be buying.
Nintendo have generally been pretty good with the currency conversion if the prices on the Virtual Console are anything to go by. Titles only tend to be a few bucks more expensive here than the US, so I suspect these packs will probably be somewhere in the vicinity of AU$15.
$10 each or $16 for both I believe.
Yeah, that’s even better than I was expecting.
“Didn’t like that stupid Mercedes DLC for Mario Kart 8? Please understand. Nintendo had something cooler coming later.”
Had?
…maybe add epona/horses as well? I’m totes serious….
I was thinking some weird epona rocking horse/kart thing?
The embalmed corpse of Epona on a mechanics dolly?
This comment makes me want it that much more!
DLC after the game is released! I feel like it’s 2005 again!
Not fussed about new character and karts, but tracks. MOAR tracks.
Actually I’m kinda surprised they didn’t mention anything about bringing back the old school battle mode since that seems to be one of the biggest criticism’s of MK8.
If I could pick 1 thing to have reintroduced into Mario Kart, that would be the challenge mode from Mario Kart DS, oh man, so good. I don’t know why they didn’t continue including it.
I’d just like to have grid times back. Finish the race and actually be able to see where others finished in comparison to you. They took it out for MKDS, and it hasn’t been back since.
But yeah the challenge mode thing was cool and should have come back. The Wii one’s weekly challenge was great as well, had me coming back for ages. And especially loved being able to see how your friends went in them – I don’t really care for leaderboards when it’s just showing the top 10 people in the world who you have no chance of even approaching because they either cheat or are some kind of god, but once it actually becomes relevant by being people I know and compete with, then it grabs my attention.
I reaaaaally want the classic battle mode + tracks. I sure hope they someday decide to bring it back.
This has made my Wednesday. C’mon Zelda tracks!
Sold
If I owned a Wii U I’d get it. Worth it for the expanded track list alone
After a few weeks, I found the tracks in MK8 a bit repetitive and started saying that it was one of the few games that I would be happy to see paid DLC for. The game itself was packed with content from the beginning, so in my view I’m more than happy to pay for extra tracks.
As much as I would love to see a full new F-Zero game, too, at least having a little bit of F-Zero style content is better than nothing and hopefully the F-Zero track that they’re teasing will be decent.
Personally, I hope that they make more DLC, as I would love to see the game expand, and I’d especially love to see the return of some of the classic battle stages…
I don’t even own a Wii U, but now I really want to race as Dry Bowser! Even though I normally hate heavy characters!
oh so this is why mk8 came with a free game – because DLC.
No that was to sell Wii Us
16 more tracks alone is a huge amount of extra content, can’t wait.
I don’t get the negativity. Every other game has map packs for multiplayer and this is no different. 16 new tracks is massive and I’m seriously looking forward to firing them up for the first time.
No other game I own has multiplayer map packs, so it’s very different to me 😛
