Bless the leader of the Minutemen, and his never-ending supply of endangered settlements. He just wants to make the world a better place. And yet…
For Fallout 4 players, Preston Garvey’s dialogue has become a running joke. Anybody that’s played the game has probably fallen into the trap of talking to Preston Garvey, which inevitably means accepting quests that task you with saving settlements around the Commonwealth. Whenever you finish one of these quests, Preston always has another one waiting for you. He’ll even mark it on your map! Thing is, settlement quests aren’t very interesting, and Fallout 4 doesn’t give you a choice in accepting the quests, either — which makes Preston Garvey a character people love to hate.
Ever since the release of Fallout 4 back in November 2015, players have reacted to Preston Garvey’s character hilariously. Preston has basically become the new “arrow in the knee” joke, but for Fallout 4. Here’s a round-up of the Preston-related jokes floating around on the internet.

My favourite part of this video titled “Why I Hate Preston Garvey” by Roman Bellic is that, even as the player is clearly plotting Garvey’s demise, Garvey will still not shut up about the settlement that needs help. Amazing.

Preston is my least favourite character in the entire game. Possibly in any game.
If you said that on tumblr you would be accused of racism.
They should patch in a cancel quest button for the radiant style quests.
If only you could assign settlers to do those missions
You can ignore them but you’ll eventually fail them, I don’t know what effect that has on the settlement that needed help. Probably just lowers morale.
But I have found you can do the open settlement mission(s), return to the settlers to let them know it’s done, but then don’t return to Preston. After a few hours the mission completes successfully and you get the XP for it, but not going near Preston means you don’t get any new settlement quests that you have to do or fail.
This totally works.
I just moved Preston to the garage just out of sanctuary hills – handed in the missions then ran like hell away before he could give me another one.
It worked 🙂
You are a sage.
Nice article Patricia but another settlement needs our help. I’ll mark it on your map for you.
Hi, Patricia can’t take your call at the moment. Her cousin keeps calling because he wants to go bowling.
When I first got promoted to General by Preston I thought “Hey this is pretty cool! I will be able to order around the minutemen and get them to guard settlements etc” but noooo! I just keep getting the same quests from a guy who is lower rank than me! I should be giving YOU quests Preston!
The moment I met Preston I knew this game would be a complete let down in all things RPG.
Go shoot stuff! Pew pew.
They wouldn’t be so bad if 1) you could choose whether to accept them, like every other radiant quest in the game, and 2) they weren’t timed, like every other radiant quest in the game.
The problem isn’t with preston at all, it’s with Bethesda with making a stupidly buggy game. If the minutemen quests didn’t happen without end it wouldn’t be an issue
having finished the main game, these settement quests keep the game going rather than just wandering around aimlessly.
plus traversing the wasteland to get to these settlements has let me discover stuff like enabling new radio towers that let me hear new signal that led to cool stuff like the trapped woman in the jewlry store.
Sounds like something a Synth would say.
Preston is just a buggy Synth, his voice patterns are stuck in a loop.
