The ambitious space game No Man’s Sky has been delayed, two sources tell Kotaku. We don’t know exactly what the new release date is — and it may not be finalised yet — but we’re hearing it’s been bumped until at least July or August.
Developed by a small UK-based team called Hello Games, No Man’s Sky has been much hyped since it was revealed back in 2013, seeing extensive coverage everywhere from the Stephen Colbert show to The New Yorker. Last October, the developers announced that it’d be out in June of 2016, but that appears to have changed.
A reliable Kotaku source was the first to inform us of the delay. A second source, who works at GameStop (the US equivalent of EB Games), said they received marketing materials today for No Man’s Sky with the original June 21 release date. However, stores were informed that the release date is no longer correct and that they should cover it up with a “Coming Soon” label:
Sony and Hello Games did not respond to requests for comment by publication time.

Hype: The Game.
E3 will reveal all.
Nooooooooooo. Grim news x_x Well at least the game will be better for it, but damn my hype has been through the roof the passed few weeks
Totally happy to wait for this excellent game, but it is a bit disappointing to find out that the “one month till release” is more like 3 months now..
As much as I want this to be good, I feel No Man Sky is not gonna live up to it’s hype ;-;
I think it’s basically impossible for it to live up to the hype surrounding it. Regardless, I’m eager to experience the game for whatever it turns out to be.
Me too! Even if the whole thing is just exploring the universe and photographing stuff I’ll probably be happy.
I agree, I think the hype train has overtaken the game to the point where, no matter how good it is, the majority will be disappointed. That will be a shame, but I am sure I will really enjoy it! I am confident in No Man’s Sky, and have reasonable expectations of what I will find,so unless it’s really bad, I don’t think I will be disappointed.
Totally agree. I have been staying clear of as much hype as possible, in the attempt to keep my personal expectations at a realistic level. I’m glad that it might be delayed, I have so many unfinished games to complete as is.
Hard to believe there is hype. All we have is some demo reels. There’s no clear point to the game, it hasn’t really promised anything yet.
No clear point to the game you say?
Minecraft’s license to print money says hello.
And you know, if this game promised to be Minecraft in space, I’d probably already have a preorder in. But it’s not even promising to be that. And Minecraft alpha sucked, it was a framework concept and launched for $10. No Man’s Sky is supposedly going to launch as a complete product, and we don’t know jack.
But the point of the game has been mentioned multiple times. It is an exploration game with the primary goal to explore all the way to the centre of the known universe/galaxy. That’s it.. that’s the point. All the other stuff you can do during that exploration is additional features.. whether it be space combat or combat on planets; exploring planets and moons for resources, tech, lore etc; uncovering the laws of the universe and so on. All of these things revolve around making exploration easier and/or more efficient for the player.
What I think is the main problem is that people wanted this game to be more than that, so they are projecting their desire for a story-driven experience or something else on to the state of the game they are seeing. If you want a game to be more than it is, of course you are going to be disappointed. If you want Uncharted 4 to have squad-base real time strategy, then you’re going to be disappointed; if you want X-Com to have air-to-air battles where you can control the interceptors directly, then you’re going to be disappointed.
The game is what it is, an exploration game with features that are used to make exploration easier as you improve your tech and understanding the of the game universe. That’s it.
Take a shot every time someone says “but what do you actually DO in No Man’s Sky?”
explore…
Mmm… more time to savour Mirror’s Edge Catalyst 🙂
Steam and the official playstation store still have the june release date. Do physical stores get news of this stuff first usually? You’d think that playstation would’ve changed the date first given their heavy involvement. GOG just says “coming soon” but I don’t remember if it had a release date or if it always said coming soon.
EDIT: On the game tile on GOG it says “coming soon” but then on the actual profile it says the june release date. Why would physical stores get Actual Stickers mailed to them (in the POST) before anyone bothered to let the digital retailers know which would take 1 email?
basically what I’m saying is: until I hear it from Sean Murray’s stupid beardy face I’m in denial
Yup. I’ll be really let down if it’s true.
yup there site still only has June 21 release date
One month out from release I’d assume the game itself is done. Perhaps a mishap has happened with production of the retail distribution. That might be why it’s been delayed.
here’s hoping!
Some people are speculating that it is only the physical copies that will be delayed..
Yeah that’s my theory. Doesn’t make sense that they would tell physical retailers but not update the info on the official website/playstation store
More time for the pile of shame then. I don’t have to worry about NMS living up to expectations by not having any to begin with, I’ve been too disappointed with space combat/trade games in the past.
Good. Now nothing can stand in the way of doing a complete Witcher 3 replay. except for Overwatch, except for … … insert the names of heaps of new games here
Id rather they delay until it d.o.n.e. done.
Those poor devs must be crunching like absolute hell right now. If you’re hype for this game, spare a thought and have a drink for Sean Murray and his team tonight.
1 Prayer = 1 solved syntax error
I got up off the couch and got a beer (Little Creatures Pale Ale), better than most reasons I would drink mid week.
And my job here is done *jumps out the window*
You need reasons to drink midweek?
Yeah, I come from a long line of alcoholics so I just keep my drinking in check and only drink on the weekends. Very rarely I’ll have 1 or 2 on a weeknight (maybe once every 2 months or so).
Fair enough, fully respect that. If I raised any issues, my bad. I tend not to drink much through the week anyway. Those days are behind me.
Nahnahnah, no issues. Not like I was abused or anything. Just saw what it did to close and extended family while I was growing up and decided very young in life to make sure that drinking was a weekend only thing (within reason, like if I was going to a gig or event mid week)
Bittersweet… really looking forward to this and it was support to release 2 days after my birthday..
But now it just means more time to play Overwatch without distraction.
We have been waiting for awhile anyway. Extra month doesn’t hurt.
Summer 2018 confirmed.
This can’t happen because i’ve already planned to be sick on the June launch date.
Happy to wait till Christmas.
That’s a shame. Personally then there’s not much between Mirror’s Edge and FFXV. Time to get perhaps finish last year’s games…
.
When did we rename sticker to “pop-on”?
and there lays my plans for winter break… sigh
Steam page hasn’t changed, still says 23 June
as if this game is ever going to live up to the hype. You’ll boot it up, play it for a couple of hours, tell everyone how amazing it is, but then never play it ever again.
Okay, guess I’ll stop being excited then? Thanks for letting me know
anytime buddy
I would have expected some info from Sean/No Man’s Sky Team/PS by now, given it’s now middle of the day in the UK.
If the rumours were false I’d have expected them to be shot down by now. All I can do is hope!!!!! And pray.
Damn…perhaps they need to hire more than what, the four people working at Hello kitty (or whatever it’s fkn called lol) games…
Going to be a little sceptical here for a small reason yes the second picture says its been delayed (the one with red text) But it also mentions lego dimensions advertising, given they’ve just released wave 5 why would they be advertising it 6 weeks away in june? I suspect this is an old thing from a previous delay.
Thoughts?
Has it been confirmed or denied yet? You’d think that because this news is doing the rounds on most major video game sites that they would come out and give a statement pretty quickly.
I hope they don’t pull a Rockstar with the PC release of GTA V and announce a month long delay exactly two weeks out from release.
This feels too much like Spore… We will see, but then again maybe we won’t as its Playstation game. No one is going to give a damn once this hits PC, we would have all moved on from the hype and the saturation of media playthrou’s on PS4…
Pfft..
Hm? The game is releasing on PS4 and PC at the same time.
How sure are you of that? I’ve been trying to tie down a PC release, and all I can find is PS4 statements. You walk into EB or JB, and all the pre-order stuff for the game refers to the PS4 version, with nothing about the PC version to be seen.
I just havent been able to nail anything specific down about the PC version.

Fair enough, just havent seen anything on the store shelves, which is strange given the prominence of the PS4 version.
It makes me wonder if those dates are default or not. Theres nothing on the official site either.
Why not? It is right at their website too

Idk why I cant edit my response.
I think I may have misunderstood your point a little. There are no physical PC announced so far, just digital.
Thats probably it then. I like the physical copy, just beause I’m like that, so am expecting to see pre-order bonuses in the shop. Particularly when the PS4 version is advertising exactly that.
But if there isnt a physical version as of yet, there isnt going to be a pre-order bonus for it in the shops. All good, will get around to ordering it from Steam anyway for the same result. Or PS4, not really sure.
haha yeah. I end up preordering the Explorers Edition from iam8bit. The cast metal plane looks sick.
