New Club Nintendo Prizes Underwhelm

7:40AM Michael McWhertor | Members of the Japanese version Club Nintendo who have racked up the required number of points from their Nintendo purchases will be able to secure one of the lovely prizes seen above — a gold painted Mario Kart Wii wheel, a Club Nintendo calendar for 2009 and a plush-looking Mario hat. Were the Wii wheel to come in Wario purple and gold and have a little “W” stamped upon it, I’d snap it up instantly, but would have to settle for the hat — were I to be a member. More »

A Wii Wheel With Stand

9:00PM Brian Ashcraft | Know what that the Wii Wheel is missing? Something to ground it. The wheel’s not attached to anything, so using it to play Mario Kart Wii hardly feels realistic (not that Mario Kart Wii is the apex of realism, but still). Japanese peripheral company JTT has a solution: The Wii Handle Controller Stand. Simply attach the Wii-mote to this peripheral steering wheel, which can then be mounted on the stand. The stand offers 120 degrees of movement, and the stand has suction cups to keep it in place. In theory sounds pretty nice — wonder how it plays. 「Wii用 ハンドルコントローラースタンド」 [Game Watch Impress] More »

The Wii Bikini Queens (Not In Bikinis)

11:20PM Brian Ashcraft | Nintendo’s Japanese ads are smart. They don’t just feature famous celebrities, but former-bikini-girls-turned-mainstream celebs. That’s curvy cheesecake pin-up turned actress Eiko Koike on the new Wii Fit TV spot. Sure, the Nintendo ad isn’t gratuitous in the least, but it certainly doesn’t turn its back on Koike’s most famous assets. This isn’t the first bikini girl to shill Wii stuff. Earlier this spring, Swimsuit idol Aki Hoshino appeared in Mario Kart Wii spots in a mini-skirt. They’ve both done some risqué stuff in the past — nothing X-rated. Google if you like! Just know: These sorts of celebs advertise all kinds of stuff in Japan, so it’s not totally unusual to see that here. Either shows how mainstream these models are or how progressive Nintendo’s Japanese advertising is. Hit the jump for the Hoshino ad from earlier this year, via Jean Snow at Game|Life. More »

Battery Packs Cause Wii Wheel Alignment Issues?

5:00AM Owen Good | Apparently, using anything other than disposable “crap-arsed gas station batteries” turns a Wii Wheel driving experience into that of a 1978 Datsun heading down to the shore. And no, that’s not a desirable mod. Not for Don at videolamer, anyway. He swears that using the battery packs from the React Recharge Dock for the Wiimote reduces the ‘Mote’s weight and makes it drive off centre when placed in the Wii Wheel. Quoth Don: Was the weight difference, a very noticeable one, messing with the ‘mote’s center-point? Yes, in fact. Replacing the rechargeable pack with a standard set of crap-assed gas station batteries made our karts dead centre again. Now I’ve got to figure out how to add weight to my charger packs. That or play Kart at an odd angle. So, fair warning, considering that the React dock runs about $AU 53.22, if you Kart like hell and are considering eco-friendly ways to keep your ‘Mote juiced. Does anyone else have the same kind of issue, or just this guy? Peripheral Disdain [Videolamer, thanks taidan] More »

Nintendo Goes On Australian Tour

3:30PM Logan Booker | Called “Connection Tour 08″, Nintendo will be traversing from Westfield shopping mall to Westfield shopping mall, showing off upcoming titles on its DS and Wii consoles. If you haven’t had a chance to play Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Connection Tour 08 will give you the perfect opportunity. Otherwise it’s not a terribly exciting event, though there are promises of Mario Kart Wii comps and “heaps of giveaways”. Kind of hard to belittle anything that involves free stuff, so I won’t try. Hit the jump for times, dates and mentions of pokemon. More »

A More Sensible Wii Racing Wheel

3:40AM Mike Fahey | Tired of putting your hands in the air and waving them like you care only about getting to the finishing line? Too lazy to craft your own stable Wii racing wheel out of everyday household items for us in Mario Kart Wii? Well then head over to Success-HK, where they have recently released the Blazepro Realistic Racing Wheel for the Wii. Using the magical power of suction cups, the Realistic Racing Wheel attaches to any smooth surface for that not-nearly-flailing-as-much feel, with the added benefit of giving your tired arms something to rest on. As a special added bonus, the wheel detaches from the base for air-driving action. More »
