The Week In Games

You can sense the holiday period approaching as the Week In Games post gets longer and longer.

The big release this week is Halo 3: ODST, which is out at midnight tonight. I thoroughly recommend it, as long as you can rely on regular co-op sessions with a group of friends.

I’d also pick up the new Professor Layton and am slightly curious about Majesty 2 and Section 8.

What’s on your shopping list this week?

New releases for the w/c September 21:

Aion: Tower of Eternity (PC)
What Is It? Massively multiplayer RPG from MMO specialists NCSoft.
Should You Care? It’s a WoW clone but with extra flying bits.

Batman: Arkham Asylum (PC)
What Is It? Slightly delayed PC version of Rocksteady’s well-received biff ’em up.
Should You Care? It’s one of the year’s best games.

Colin McRae: DiRT 2 (DS)
What Is It? DiRT 2! On the DS!
Should You Care? I can’t imagine this is the definitive version.

Cross Edge (PS3)
What Is It? JRPG featuring characters from Disgaea, Darkstalkers and other niche JRPG series.
Should You Care? Only for the super hardcore.

East India Company (PC)
What Is It? Realtime strategy with an emphasis on trading and naval warfare.
Should You Care? If you like your strategy to stay within safe, shallow waters.

Halo 3: ODST (360)
What Is It? Halo 3 expansion with a short new campaign, new co-op multiplayer mode and every Halo 3 map released thus far, plus 3 new ones.
Should You Care? More for the co-op player than the solo marine.

Hearts of Iron III (PC)
What Is It? Staggeringly complex strategy game set during World War II.
Should You Care? How much do you love stats?

Imagine: Party Planner (DS)
What Is It? Government sim that has you managing factional politics… uhhh…
Should You Care? Not really.

Katamari Forever (PS3)
What Is It? PS3-exclusive of the quirky roll ’em up.
Should You Care? Possibly the series’ best, but the novelty’s worn off.

Majesty 2 (PC)
What Is It? Part-RTS and part-people-sim with a nice line in fantasy humour.
Should You Care? Worth a look if you’re looking for a fresh perspective on the strategy genre.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 (PS3, Wii)
What Is It? PS3 and Wii owners get the Marvel brawler a week later than 360 owners.
Should You Care? Plenty of dumb fun right here.

Mini Ninjas (360, PS3, Wii, DS)
What Is It? Stealthy but cartoony action/adventure from the developers of the Hitman series.
Should You Care? Definitively one for a younger audience.

Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box (DS)
What Is It? Clever collection of logic puzzles backed up by a charming narrative.
Should You Care? Essential DS gaming.

PT Boats: Knights of the Sea (PC)
What Is It? Naval warfare sim that I’m sure I’ve listed here several times in recent months.
Should You Care? It’s now finally getting released! (I think.)

Section 8 (360, PC)
What Is It? Class-based shooter that’s really all about the team-based multiplayer.
Should You Care? Expect it to have a much stronger community on PC than 360.

World of Goo (PC)
What Is It? Hugely delayed disc-based release of last year’s indie darling.
Should You Care? A must buy. Unless you bought it last year.
