The Week In Games

After last week’s onslaught, perhaps some of you were quietly hoping there’d be no games worth buying this week. You were wrong.

There are some big releases coming on Thursday. Borderlands, Forza 3, some wrestling game, to name but three. For me though, the pick of the bunch is the third Mario & Luigi adventure for DS, a glorious return to form for the action-RPG series after a slightly disappointed second iteration. Bowser’s Inside Story is Nintendo at their mischievous, inventive best.

What are you picking up this week?

New releases for the w/c October 19:

Borderlands (360, PS3)
What Is It? Not-so-serious post-apocalyptic open world shooter with RPG-style questing and character progression.
Should You Care? If you wanted more shooting and less story from Fallout 3. It’s good fun in co-op too.

CSI: Deadly Intent (Wii)
What Is It? Pointy-clicky adventure with lots of pixel hunting.
Should You Care? For fans of the show rather than fans of adventure games.

Disney Sing It: Pop Hits (PS3, PS2, Wii)
What Is It? Karaoke game in the vein of SingStar, delayed from last week.
Should You Care? It’s all about the track list.

Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition (360, PS3, PC)
What Is It? Fallout 3 plus its five DLC episodes in one box.
Should You Care? A must-have for those who don’t own Fallout 3 and/or its DLC.

Forza Motorsport 3 (360)
What Is It? Microsoft’s answer to Gran Turismo gets its third edition and second this console generation.
Should You Care? It’s all your sleek, authentic, but personality-free racing sim dreams come true.

Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility (Wii)
What Is It? Farming sim where you tend crops and husband animals while romancing a local boy or girl to start a family.
Should You Care? Yep, it’s yet another Harvest Moon game.

Imagine: Beauty Stylist (DS)
What Is It? In a post-apocalyptic world, only one man can save… Oh?
Should You Care? No, that’s not right.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (DS)
What Is It? Action RPG mélange of Square Enix and Disney characters. Has a notable 4-player co-op mode.
Should You Care? Grind, grind and grind some more.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (DS)
What Is It? Clever mix of action-y bits, puzzle-y bits and RPG-y bits all told with tongue firmly in cheek. Literally, in this case.
Should You Care? Don’t overlook one of the year’s best games.

Marvel Super Hero Squad (PS2, PSP, Wii, DS)
What Is It? Punchy, kicky, zappy, arena brawler staffed by a bunch of super-deformed Marvel characters.
Should You Care? Your kid brother might dig it.

WWE Smackdown VS RAW 2010 (360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, DS)
What Is It? If there’s a game genre I cannot even begin to comprehend, it’s the wrestling game.
Should You Care? I have no idea.

X3 Gold (PC)
What Is It? Hardcore space sim where you fight, trade and explore the galaxy all while trying not to be stumped by the interface.
Should You Care? Bit of a bargain really: original + expansion + soundtrack for half-price.
