Tower Toppler! At the time I was amazed at the rotating tower effect. Amazement gave way to frustration though, it was pretty unforgiving platforming. Whatever that creature was, it could shoot pellets out of its schnozzle!

Nebulus, and judging by the colours – i’d say Amiga version?
Actually could be the yankee version too – with the unfortunate title of “Tower Toppler”

Ahhh…I’ve played it but can’t for the life of me remember what its called. Wasn’t the easiest of games though thats for sure!

Oh, so thats what its called… Hmmm that one didn’t come to mind but I have to admit that was a strange thing to type into google.
(Don’t worry David I won’t post the answer…not that someone else won’t get it)

Oh my dear sweet Nebulous.
Dear god was I addicted to that tower climber back in the day.
I always failed majorly at the shooter sections between towers though. 🙁

Wow, one I remember (played it on Atari though).
Destroy tower, hop in my sub (to make a quick run) so many memories! -

Nebulous! Personal favourite from my younger years with the C64. Hard, unforgiving but entirely charming. Refuse to acknowledge any stupid tower toppler naming nonsense however 🙂

That’s definitely Nebulous. Doesn’t quite look right for the Amiga though.
The Amiga version looked a lot cleaner and shinier than that pic shows. It might be a result of the shrinking to thumbnail size but the Ami version also had a constant ripple effect in the water and I don’t see one there, so I’m guessing a less capable platform – did it come out on PC? Maybe the Atari ST version? From memory it’s graphics weren’t quite up to the Ami’s but pretty close.

Okay, after posting I cheated and Google found me the pic that David used. It appears that I had my nostalgia glasses on. *sigh*

There’s a fair bit of compression artifacts in that pic, but the emulator screenshots don’t do the original graphics justice on any old platform.
PAL or NTSC artifacts were part of the design process and that’s missing.

This game is a masterpiece study on how to use audio in games, on the c64 version anyway.

Definitely Nebulus. Either the Atari ST or Amiga versions, which looked quite similar. There was a ripple effect on the ST version too but I’m not sure it’d show up on a still…

Definitely Nebulus Originally on C64. I was addicted for weeks and at the time it was a technical marvel for it’s multiple layers of paralax scrolling to create the 3d rotational effect of the tower. Paralax was a massively popular effect with the demo coders at the time to create trippy visuals and this was the first time I recall it used so extensively in a game
Ah! Fond childhood memories come flooding back.
I’d still rather be playing Assassins Creed 2 though.
