Stories Of The Year #9: Why Do Games Cost So Much?

It’s the last week of the year, so we’ve decided to go into the Kotaku backlogs and pick out the most popular stories of 2010. Some are interesting, some are funny, some are flat out stupid.

Personally this was a story I wanted to write from the day I started here at Kotaku, and it was probably one of the most difficult to get going. No-one in Australia would touch the topic with a barge pole. Eventually I had to go outside of the games industry to find someone interested in the topic, and the feature just flowed from there!

I’m pretty proud of this one, and I’m glad that you guys enjoyed it too. Hopefully we’ll be able to find new ways to cover and look at this growing issue in 2011.

Stories of the Year: Why Do Video Games Cost So Much In Australia

  • Hopefully our website ( and Cheap$kate Gamers can help spread the word that there are plenty of bargains to be had, and where to find them.

The more people who support our sites will mean the retailers will have to start worrying about their prices!

    • It is actually the big retailers making the killing with the high prices. Support the smaller guys, where you still get a decent discount and the service. There are smaller retailers out there who give genuine bargains, you just have to find them. Sadly i dont think your website shows them.
For eg: my local retailer has been selling games for around $50 to $60 for brand new ps3/360 games.

  • I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: Import, import, import.

Same goes for Steam: They’re ripping us off, I won’t buy from them either.
