Games don't always necessarily need to be games - just look at Ghost Trick, a game which uses a simple mechanic to tell an engaging story. On a smaller scale Bela Kovacs and the Trail of Blood is like that - an interactive story that integrates real photography into a compelling noir, murder mystery.
Sure it's a little cheesy, but I enjoyed the change of pace. I've always loved games that allow you to scour for information - like the scanning mechanic in Metroid Prime, or the pixel hunt of old-school adventure games. Bela Kovacs and the Trail of Blood has that feel. It's simple and completely basic, but a different type of LunchTimeWaster - and that's something I can get behind.
