It reminded me of that too, but I don’t recall that weird sideways ladder thing (is it meant to be a window?)

Jonathon Tree
There’s shadows behind it. This would seem to imply that the bricks are actually the floor.

I recognise those bricks anywhere, bad luck Serrels you screwed up again, it’s clearly that classic game, the one we’ve all played many years ago yet you thought you could trick us, but let me tell you it won’t work this time because quite frankly it is easy to see what game this obviously is, so hang your head in shame because you have failed to fool us yet again!

I almost would’ve said metal gear NES http://www.consoleclassix.com/info_img/Metal_Gear_NES_ScreenShot2.jpg BUT it doesn’t quite match up. It does look a lot like a NES game though, ducktales or something like that. New Zealand Story? I got nothin’.

I agree it’s got to be a solid declaration of a game, not a buck shot spread.
if you gonna call it, call it…
and he finished it with “I got nothing!” so there you go… the comment was clearly “it’s in this ball park somewhere, even if it turns out to be nothing like this. Maybee!”

How long will it be until you just show us a single pixel of a screenshot and ask us to guess the game? lol

It reminds me of the Count Duckula game on the C64… doubt its it.. but damn that was a good game.

he may now be wise to tiny eye and ether grabs his own image ( so it doesn’t appear in tiny eye’s cache or, processes the image so that the pixels don’t match and thusly don’t register a hit…
good thing too….. stop cheating you swine… or at least keep the answer to yourself if you do…

We’re just lulling him into a false sense of security before giving the correct answer at 4:59PM

Pretty sure there’s no ‘thin’ bricks like that in the Ghost House, granted it’s a tiny segment of a screenshot but I’d be putting my thoughts on an 8-bit rather that 16-bit era game.
-
mick
yeah you’re right, it looks more 8-bit than 16

For some reason I’m thinking it’s one of the towers from Pokemon Gold and Silver.

It’s all about the art of deduction.
Mark Serrels is a man of many talents, but to beat him you have to think like him and imagine the scenario behind his choice.
In an effort to trick the Kotaku Community he looks to his surroundings.
A small bird lands in front of his window. “Hey that bird looks nothing like a Kiwi Bird, that reminds me of New Zealand Story!” he utters to himself as he strokes his non existant beard.
But grabbing a screenshot from the arcade version would make it too easy and this is one time that the screenshot won’t be guessed within 5 minutes.
Oh no, Mark will get the community this time with his sneakiness, so he goes for one of the many ports, eventually settling on the commodore 64 version, choosing an obscure section with little detail to clue people in.
Unfortunately this would be his undoing, for the commodore 64 has many telltale signs in its graphics. The low resolution, the lack of colour and detail, much less than a NES but more than an Atari 2600.
Then it is just up to the fading memory of a young-ish man, bored with his work but with a library of played games in his mind from years of preparing for this very moment.
So yeah I basically google image searched every game I could remember having yellow bricks in the background until I found something matching.

stephen rushbrook
damn it . too late…. the instant I looked at it screamed NZStory to me.. ( no. dot ask me why… Other than the predominance of yellow an the utter disregard foe making walls an platforms blend into the background…
)

60+ pages of Google Image search and I kept coming back to that title, but just never could be sure enough.
Well done!

Ty
Nicely done. And yeah, the palette’s a bit off for the NES, with the detail too smashed to qualify as Ninty’s 8-bit. Any guesses outside the 8-bit range aren’t even shot-in-the-dark quality.

I don’t know what it is, but the (recurring) entries for “Modern Warfare” and “Crysis” just never get old.
-

I’m with this guy..
It’s very clever isn’t it, but not nearly as witty as the guys who make up a game title based on the contents of the picture.. “uh, it’s clearly Yellow Brick Road : Blue Bar edition”.. Now that NEVER gets old.. sheesh
Well played, Mark, very well played.. but I don’t get to check Kotaku till after 6 each day, still need to up the difficulty by about 3 hours of guessing worth.. I know Im not asking for much lol..

This is one of those ones where we’re all going to kick ourselves REAL hard once we see what it is, isn’t it?

Well lookit dat!
Haha I feel a lot better now for two reasons;
1) I would NEVER have guessed that one
2) Your reaction was BRILLIANT

I guess the answer’s out… but I was genuinely going to guess Kiwi Kraze for the NES which happens to be an alternate version of the game…
