GTA IV Overtakes San Andreas In Lifetime Sales

Grand Theft Auto IV, released in 2008, has just now overtaken its predecessor, 2004’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in total sales, says the top boss over the GTA brand.

Grand Theft Auto IV moved more than two million copies between March and now, according to figures cited by Strauss Zelnick, the publisher of Take-Two Interactive, at a conference today. That brings the GTA IV total to 22 million, surpassing the 21.5 reported for San Andreas.

On the whole, the Grand Theft Auto franchise has shipped 114 million copies since its 1997 debut. By comparison, here are other figures for Take-Two series, as reported by the publisher.

Midnight Club: 18.5 million
NBA2K: 17 million
Red Dead Redemption: 12.5 million
Civilization: 11 million
BioShock: 9 million
Carnival Games: 8 million
Max Payne: 7.5 million
Mafia: 5 million
Borderlands: 4.5 million
The Darkness: 1 million

Correction: Not so fast, Rockstar tells us that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas remains the champ with 27.5 million copies sold worldwide.

Grand Theft Auto Passes 22M Shipped; Franchise Above 114M [Gamasutra]

  • I got two copies of GTA4, one on the 360, played it to death but never got multiplayer to work. And one on the PC coz it was cheap on Steam. Eventually got multiplayer to work but then after about a week it stopped working all together. 🙁

  • I’ve been playing GTA since the first title, huge fan. I was disappointed with the GTA IV series(IV & EFLC), it wasn’t fun anymore. We are in 2011, I still play San Andreas(Multiplayer though).

  • I’ve bought this game twice.
once on PS3 and once on Steam (cheap $7.50).

Doesn’t make this game better than its predecessors.
I would say GTA:VC was the best out of the series, followed by GTA:SA.

    GTA4 is boring.

  • It took me a long time to get into GTA4. The game took a more serious tone which I guess sucked the fun out of it a little. I look forward to seeing what comes next. GTA:VC was brilliant & RDR I think is Rockstar’s best game this gen.

  • I never played GTA4 much. After buying it on Steam, then having to register for about 3 different services to get it up and running, then having to log into them all every time I wanted to play the game, I stopped playing for a while after finding the game wasn’t as fun as its predecessors.

When I did eventually decide to return to the game, I found that my Games for Windows Live account had been locked due to inactivity and was not able to be reactivated, requiring me to sign up again for a new account. Also all the Fallout 3 DLC I’d purchased on the prior account I can no longer download. Deciding that it was just too much effort to play, I deleted the game from my system and have decided not to buy any more games that require Games for Windows Live.
