Watching The New Pokémon Trailer With An Eight-Year-Old

Nintendo released another trailer for its upcoming collaboration with Koei Tecmo, Pokémon Plus Nobunaga's Ambition.

The game isn't exactly what people are expecting, and when I showed my eight-year-old this trailer for the first time tonight, neither was he.

"What is this?" Mini-Bash asked.

"It's a new Pokémon game," I said.

"It doesn't look very Pokémon. Who are these people?"

"That is Oda Nobunaga."

"What's he doing in Pokémon?"

"I don't know," I said.

"This is really strange."

"It really is."

When the trailer wrapped up, the announcer said there was a limited edition card included with the game. "Hurry!" the announcer added.

"I'm not going to hurry," said Mini-Bash. "I want a new Pokémon game, but not this."

Nobody who really, really likes Pocket Monsters wants this.

This game dilutes everything that is Pokémon in favour of unrealistic depictions of Japanese historical figures. And for what?

While my kid isn't looking forward to this game, that doesn't mean Pokémon Plus Nobunaga's Ambition won't be a huge hit. The Pokémon brand name is strong. It will sell.

I for one am highly intrigued by this game. I love the whole Sengoku period of Japanese history, and I think it would be very interesting to see how that kind of thing would play out in a world with Pokemon.
I love the idea of a Pokemon game set in a time where Pokeballs were not yet invented - a more archaic, less cartoony time, where samurai fight with and against pokemon.
Thing is, I don't think this game will be quite what I'm thinking of, and I would be surprised if it was. But I guess we'll see how it goes.

No, I'm really looking forward to it as well. It seems that Bashcraft doesn't like the idea, so he writes a different story every week about how it's going to be such a terrible game, and how nobody wants it.

I'm with Bashcraft on this... Now before i get burned to the stake, This really seems to draw away too far from the series... It will sell however, based on the pokemon name... not to say itll be a bad game, just not pokemon.

I'm looking forward to this one. The main pokemon games haven't changed in years, which is why I stopped playing them. This at least looks like a Pokemon themed rpg which does not follow the same tired formula.

Agreed, although I still play it every time a new gen comes out. It's funny how people criticise this for not being Pokemon, yet complain how as a franchise it never changes.

This is like bashing Mario Kart because it isn't Super Mario Bros. Have you never heard of spin-offs? Just treat it as a different series.

Oh, and, for the record, I really, really like Pocket Monsters. And I'm still really excited for this, because I happen to play other genres of games as well, including strategy/tactics.
