Let's Talk About Our Favourite Game Music

This is what I've been doing for the last 30 minutes -- searching for youtube links to my favourite video game soundtracks. I know, I know. What a waste of time. But I thought I'd share some of my own favourites. Now I want to hear yours!

I'm going to put some of mine below, but I'd love for you guys to drop your favourites in the comments below!

Metal Gear Solid 3

Most people love the Snake Eater theme -- and I'm among that group -- but I think the amazing song that comes afterwards, the one that accompanies the actual title screen, is equally as memorable. I just love the low, minimalistic scuzzy bass line. I could listen to this for ages.

Super Metroid

Seriously. How good is this?

Neir

I've actually never played this game -- but a friend put me on to this, and I've fallen in love with it!

Halo: Reach

Halo has always had memorable music. Love this one.

Secret Of Mana

I find it hard to listen to this without collapsing into a fetal ball of pure nostalgia.

Metroid Prime

Metroid Prime is godly. This music is godly.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

By far the best thing about the most recent Zelda was this track. Maybe my favourite Zelda song of all time.

Alright, let's hear some of your favourites!

What about the work of Akira Yamaoka of the Silent Hill series?

Honestly, while Yamaoka's work brought Silent Hill to life and was superb in setting the mood, as actual listening music (if that makes any sense) I dont really think its very good. Its not the kind of thing you would have in your ipod.

I have all the silent hill OST's on my ipod and I listen to them all the time...

I dunno, I usually listen to music to chill out and something as disquieting as the SH OST seems like an odd choice.

I don't think you're giving the Silent Hill OSTs a proper listen, as a bunch of the tracks are trip hop. That's about as chill as you can get. :P

            I think they're most obvious in Silent Hills 2's & 4's soundtracks.

I listen to the SH OST's while I sleep -I find they are awesome to sleep too. Especially from SH2 and onwards. That chilled out, stoner-ish Massive Attack vibe I get from them really chills me out hardcore. Akira Yamaoka is my hero.

    Bastion - Amazeballs

Skyrim - need i say more

Gears of War 2-3 - oddly enough i really love the heavy sounds of Steve Jablonsky's work

and as you stated, the Halo series of games has always had memorable music.

    ...

OHOH and lastly, Outcast... that game's music blew my mind back in the day

    DKC 1 Underwater theme

      Ambient Gemini OC Remix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-M5gFGUB2oA

Bastion's soundtrack was amazing, I've spent so much time listening to it:

+ 1 for that, you can pick up pretty cheap as well from Bandcamp. Zia and Zulf's songs are standouts.

To Zanarkand from FFX is pretty damned awesome.

Mirror's Edge has a fantastic soundtrack that just seems to fit the game perfectly.

And of course, there's always Bastion.

The Bionic Commando Rearmed OST is still one of my favourite VG albums.
    Just listen to this:

    Also MegaMan 2.

Amazing call on the Bionic Commando Rearmed OST.

I recommend the album to everyone. If you're a fan of BC it's a great remix of the stage themes, if not then it's just an awesome album.

        Well worth the price tag.

      I second that.

And who could forget this gem from Portal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxTNqYAWISs

Not my favourite, but a song that has stuck with me. So much so that when I started music just after this game came out, it was one of the first track I taught myself how to play on guitar.

Pretty much all of Vampire: The Masqerade Bloodlines. Some good atmospheric music and some awesome goth, thrash & industrial metal and a dance song that a passionate hater of dance actually liked (probably becauise it was close to being industrial metal itself).

For all it was screwed up by being turned into a console RTS, Brutal Legend had some fantastic music in it too

If we're talking specifically about music composed specifically for games, then Planescape Torment's soundtrack wins hands down

    Dude,

    End of discussion :p

I like Canabalt's soundtrack. Don't think I'd listen to it outside the game, but it really fits the game perfectly and is a huge part of the reason I like the game.

Also, same artist, Super Meat Boy.

    Bioshock.

Definitely. I've got both OSTs on my iPod, and every so often one pops up and my mind drifts back to Rapture for a few minutes.
Also have Alan Wake on there - brilliantly thematic, with a couple of diversions into slightly creepy ballads.

Some in my soundtracks collection in no particular order:
    Monkey Island 1 and 2
    Oblivion
    Skyrim
    Portal 2
    Fallout (heck, all of them)
    The Dig
    Heroes V
    Lost Odyssey

My favourite topic! - I 'll give you an action / FPS theme.
    And it's all pretty recent...

By far the best ever was Nine Inch Nails and Quake 2
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvRYVSQS2_s

then I reckon Armored Prayer - Gears of War.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0PYTMcaAAY

then maybe some Call of Duty MW2 - Invasion
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZpAe96dtBk

And I cant go past Deus Ex
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiN6t7K7txw

Wow. This made me remember what a great sound track the original Quake had as well(Also Nine Inch Nails). Better than Quake 2 imho.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mv5Jvr2Fp48

Oh yeah, that was sweet too.

I think that the strong soundtrack that Quake had really took that game into the next level. When that soundtrack came on, you just knew it was something to be remembered.

Also, I recommend not listening to it while driving. You are likely to hurt someone.

There are so many good ones... What to choose!

My most recent favourites are To The Moon and Final Fantasy Type-0. I know it hasn't been released outside Japan, but wow has it got an amazing soundtrack, especially for a PSP game. Am feverently awaiting an English release.

Also most/all Final Fantasy soundtracks, and the Zelda theme.

      These 2 especially:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPcz--9g2Vs

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXp1dGuW0xU

These are 2 of many good ones:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXp1dGuW0xU

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPcz--9g2Vs

Aquaria soundtrack was amazing. I've had this song stuck in my head since buying the humble soundtrack bundle:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIMv44Jk990

The Opera Scene from Final Fantasy VI

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwHrQdC02FY

Plus anything from "Jet Set Radio Future" or "The World Ends With You".

    Shadow of the Colossus

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKIdR_JYxTg

The Best is Yet to Come. Metal Gear Solid.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6miaTf1gF4g

Kingdom Hearts is probably my favourite game soundtrack.
And Mass Effect 2. The Normandy Reborn is an amazing piece of music.

    monkey island 3 was fantastic

but i feel like mario64 needs to be in the list somewhere... it was full of awesome tunes that were orchestrated so well with the gameplay

    Anything from Nier is amazing.
I'm also quite partial to the intro song from Metal Gear Solid 2.

I was very happy to see it make Mark's list. Final Fantasy used to have my fave game music but I think I now actualy like Neir's a little more.

    Total Annihiliation.

Probably the best orchestra score out there. When certain tracks kicked in, it made the war seem even more epic.

    Final Fantasy X. I don't know why.

Although lately I've had the music from Realm of a Mad God stuck in my head.

I think Mass Effect 2's "The Illusive Man" is my favourite track from anything, ever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lw9iXmc68zc

I love Jesper Kyd's soundtrack for Assassin's Creed 2 but "Hideout" is probably my favourite from it simply because of its pace: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0SXGlPQLsc
Another from that soundtrack that's just fantastic is Venice Rooftops: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EaRHlo4B0Y

I replayed Uncharted 3 last week and "Small Beginnings" was stuck in my head for a good while: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwADUsUP3uo&feature=related

There's a lot of old stuff that I like, too, but the problem is it's harder to find those pieces because I didn't have soundtracks for them back in the day so it was just 'really cool music that played in this particular level'. A lot of the Crash Bandicoot themes, for example, are really good too.

Also, the Objection themes in the Phoenix Wright games. :p
