Nobody Knows How Powerful The Wii U Actually Is

Gamers and game developers have spent much of the past year arguing and speculating over Nintendo's upcoming Wii U console. Will it be more powerful than other gaming devices? Less powerful? Just as powerful? Will it have HD graphics? Online connectivity? Arms? Will it do your taxes?

The truth is that nobody seems to know anything. First a Darksiders dev said the Wii U is as powerful as the current-gen Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 gaming consoles. Then the gaming website reported that developers told them it's less powerful than current-gen consoles.

Now Gearbox's Brian Martel, director of the upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines, said in an interview published today by Nintendo Gamer that the Wii U is more powerful than current-gen consoles.

"Things like the Wii U are becoming very sexy," he said. "The machine itself will be one of the best-looking versions of the game, you know, because they've got more RAM than some of the other things. And you know, they're late in the cycle so they've got this really great processor and all that kind of stuff."

All these conflicting reports are making my head explode. We'll know more at this year's E3 conference in June. Until then, let's just assume that the Wii U is just a figment of our collective imaginations.

If it is less powerful than current consoles I would be very surprised. But only time will tell.

Too bad the console looks hideous,

THANKYOU!!! Someone else who shares my thoughts. That thing needs a serious re-design imo. Especially next to a Wii, which is a sexy console i think.

i'll take this guys words over some random 'source'. Looking forward to the Wii U very much

I hope it can do my taxes. Preferably in the background, so I can play games whilst it does my deductions. :P

That would be a convenient feature

After picking up a cheap Wii in the DSE sales. I think I might actually buy one of these, well once they bring out the black version.

It's always interesting when talking about how "powerful" something is.
Techinically the PS3 is more powerful than the 360 but there haven't been any games which really demonstrate that power.
By the same count, the Gamecube didn't have the most powerful components, that went to the 360, but the integrated and unified hardware (all IBM) managed to prduce some of the best visuals and performance of the generation.
Ultimately, the real proof is in the games.

Derp the 360 and Gamecube are in totally different generations.

I think he probably meant the original Xbox.

And he's right, while the Xbox was technically more powerful the Gamecube's visuals were often on par with it when comparing cross platform titles. The only thing the Xbox really had over the GC was widescreen support.

I'd argue that both Uncharted 2 and 3 showed how powerful the PS3 really is, but unfortunately only Naughty Dog and a couple other developers really worked out how to take full advantage of the cell processor.

Yeah, it was the exclusives that showed the gap... Uncharted, Killzone, God of War, etc. Multiplatform developers tend to go for lowest common denominator that ends up not taking advantage of the full capabilities of ANY of the platforms they're on.

Yeah hope it does my taxes as I'm pushing 40 and never filled out a tax return.Dosent the Wii-u have an AMD/ATI 6670?Which I would assume would put it in the same ball-park as the Next-Box and PS4 at least graphics processor wise.

Nice troll! Um, then I'm 97 and never been kissed. Hope it can kiss me, so I can feel sweet sweet love before I die.

It has an R770 Gpu which is in the HD4850/4870/4890. Which is actually more powerful than the 6670 thats meant to be in the 'Nextbox'

It won't be any less powerful than current gen. Why? Because of ports, dirty, lagging, unoriginal ports.
