Happy Wars Is Xbox Live's First F2P Game

Last year there was a lot of rumbling about Xbox Live someday offering free-to-play video games. Well, that day is coming soon. Happy Wars, by ToyLogic, will be available for free to all Xbox Live Goldmembers this fall.

The game promises "large scale multiplayer action" that supports up to 30 players in a single battle. It'll make money through the sale of "lavishly rendered items ... for your character to flaunt your originality on the field of valour."

No release date has been specified other than spring 2012. It appears the decision to make it free-to-play was just made. That trailer popped up on YouTube yesterday, and the game's official site still lists its price as TBA.

And yet another intelligent comment from the Internet. Let's troll just because it's fun to do so without even giving the game a try...

available for free to people who PAID for xbox gold.

Unless you're on the free one month of Gold that the Xbox comes with.

But then your 'time is money'.

Yeah I don't think this counts as F2P. Technically you are paying for 2 things to be able to play it, your monthly internet service and Xbox Gold. Not free at all.

Dude don't forget that you have to pay you OWN power bill and provide your OWN games console. How dare they!

Plus you need to pay for FOOD so you can be nourished enough to play.

Of course, no other F2P game EVER required an internet connection.

You people are ridiculous. Yeah you pay for XBL. Ou always have if ou have had live. And you have paid for the games you play now. Now they are adding games that are free. So first game on xbl that ou don't have to pay for equals FREE 2 PLAY

You not ou by the way

Dude. Whilst correcting ou spelling take a look at ou grammar.

I did correct it. Notice the correction under my main comment. Observation skills equals zero. Oh no wonder people think its not free 2 play. Intellect has really slipped this generation.

+1 for the 'not really F2P camp'... having to pay for XBLA gold is a form of subscription.

You already paid prior. And you pay for any arcade games and disc games you have. So having a game you don't pay monthly like phantasy star. Or pay a price to download it. Equals free to play. Not sure what's so hard about that since no game including indie games have ever been free. You pay for Internet and a pc and power bill to play free to play on pc. Same thing here. Think a little bit it won't hurt.
