Arrested Arma Developers Leave A Message For Friends And Family

Earlier this month, news broke that two game developers were arrested in Greece for "spying". The developers had been working on ArmA III, a near future military game set on a Greek Island.

At the time, the studio at which the developers work, Bohemia Interactive, said the two men were not visiting the island of Lemnos for the game. Arma III uses Lemnos as a setting.

Today, Bohemia Interactive' released a new statement about the arrest as well as comments from the two developers, Ivan Buchta and Martin Pezlar. Bohemia Interactive passed along a message from the two men for their friends and family:

The conditions are tough, but the people we meet treat us fairly and correctly. It is all a completely absurd misunderstanding that will certainly be quickly explained. We mainly think of you, our families; you have to stay calm and not to worry about us. We hope we will meet soon.

The studio once again reiterated that the two developers were in Lemnos on vacation. The game, says Bohemia Interactive, is nearly completely, and the in-game Lemnos is a highly modified version of the real place. Apparently, Buchta and Pezlar were simply interested in visiting. Here's Bohmenia Interactive: "We sincerely hope that the whole situation is no more than an unfortunate and deep misunderstanding. The in-game Limnos is close to completion, and it's far from an identical replication of the real place. It was heavily modified to fit the game's backstory, a purely fictional 2035 setting. It was rescaled to only 75% of the real island, and it does not attempt to display any real world military installations situated on the island of Lemnos."

As to what the two men filmed, Bohemia Interactive says the developers took video and photos in public areas. "These included a short video as they drove through the main road passing around the international airport, where in one short part of the video off in the distance some hangars and other buildings of the complex can be seen," says the studio. "It's very likely that many tourists may have pictures similar to those taken by Ivan and Martin in their own family albums, without being aware that they put themselves or their families at risk."

As previously posted, Buchta and Pezlar face up to 20 years in prison.

Poor guys... although... I can kinda understand, i mean, the various nation lying in wait to attack Greece could use Arma as the perfect recon...

why would you attack Greece? Theres nothing there worth anything...

That marinated lamb is damn tasty. It's got to be worth something.

Their entire army consists of elderly mothers who will literally drown you in food and love...but if you take a piece without asking you'll get a slap across the wrist with a machete.

So I guess you could say they were in... arrested development?
More seriously, why these developers claimed they were working on ARMA 3 while it's nearly finished is bizarre. Despite that, I really don't think two game developers would want to spy on a Greek Island in their spare time.

Well they are/were working on ARMA3, despite it being nearly finished. I don't think it's that odd a statement to make.

What a ridiculous situation... I hope the poor guys can go home soon to their friends and families.

They want to pretend they're worth something still

Woops meant to reply to Edward, but yeah in all seriousness I hope they get out of this, so unlucky

Yeah its a horrible situation, I feel really bad for them, it reeks of political bargaining.

Yeah right, this coming from a country who rather unsuccessfully tried more or less to ban gaming some time ago.

Yoyu would think thir studio could be backing them up a little more vigorously rather than denying all knowledge,

They seem to be doing what they can:

Why is everyone assuming they are innocent? What an awesome cover story!!!!

Because nobody would spy on such a s**t country with no economic power or resources.

Because theres more money in my 4 year old neighbour's piggy bank thats why.

Ever heard of the concept of innocent until proven guilty?

That and Greece has a history of jailing tourists for merely taking photos at an airshow... To me it seems quite unreasonable to let tourists get so close to a place that is so sensitive that they're not allowed to photograph it.

Yes. But I neither live in Greece or have been charged with espionage against the military. Have you? Whilst this presumption is relevant in AUSTRALIA in criminal matters is this necessarily relevant in relation to Greek military based charges?

Of course they may not enjoy the presumption of innocence in a legal context; But that doesn't change my PERSONAL PREFERENCE to assume that people are innocent until convincing proof emerges of them having done something wong. And yes, I'm probably biased because I like the games they make. :P

You realise the hypocrisy of your statement? Why does my personal preference to assume that they MAY be guilty when they are taking photos of military bases in an area that has multiple signs saying DO NOT TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS OR YOU WILL GO TO JAIL. There is the evidence regardless of motivation. They have broken the law. Further you initially replied with a statement regarding 'innocent until proven guilty' which you then seem to retract? What is your point?

Umm. Convincing proof they have done something wrong. What proof other than being caught red handed and admitting to taking the photos? You are an idiot.

Not sure if unable to tolerate differing view points or just trolling...

No. I am saying your not thinking. They are guilty. They took illegal photos. What the fuck are you going on about? Read what I have typed. they took photos. Regardless of whether they are spies or not they broke the law. What bit do you not understand???

Martin, yes they took photos. That alone does not make them spy's.

When you call people idiots merely for having a different opinion, there is a trend for some of them to immediately lose interest in talking with you.

It be a crazy idea for a another country to attack Greece because they have Spartans :P
