It's Like China Is Making A Real Stargate Transport Ring

In the Stargate universe, there are these giant rings called, well, Stargates, that are portal devices that allow quick travel through space. In China, there's this.

It's called the "Ring of Life". According to Reuters (via The Atlantic), the structure is 157 metres tall, is built using 3000 tons of steel (not Naqahdah, sorry!), and costs US$16 million.

Japanese site China Explosion reports that there were even initial plans to allow bungee jumping off the ring, but those were shelved over safety concerns.

Online in China, the Ring of Life seems to be a source of amusement, leading to a rash of Photoshops on China's social networking site Sina Weibo that poke fun at the structure.

And no, it's not actually a functioning Stargate. China's tech might be good, but it's not that good. Yet.

See, China's sneaky. They're building the death star, and disguising its parts as mundane buildings. Thats part of the main Cannon-O-Doom™. Either that, or the worlds best hot-rod loop. It can't be a stargate though (much to my dissapointment) as they have a secondary ring that can dial co-ordinates. Unless your on the destiny, then they just spin the whole damn gate.

      no its really a stargate
chinas tech is so good they upgraded the secondary ring to be able to dial from a touchscreen ainol tablet

        Anal tablets?? Not thanks!

having just got back from a 3 week tour of china I can say 2 things:

    - the chinese loves doing things BIG

    - i can't believe they wouldn't allow bungie jumping because of "safety concerns"
