I’ve been living in Australia for five years now and a sport I’ve slowly began to appreciate over time is AFL. There just seems to be a lot of finesse and skill to kicking that weird shaped ball around that massive oval, and the games I’ve gone to have always been entertaining. But there’s been very few actual AFL video games. There’s the AFL Live series, of course, but that’s your whack. This new iPhone game, GoalKicker, is actually a really cool diversion and totally worth checking out if you’re a fan of AFL.
Goalkicker does what a lot of clever mobile titles do — it completely does away with any notion of being a decent representation of the sport and focuses on one single aspect of it. A number of football iOS games have done a similar thing, and it works well with Goalkicker.
Goalkicker is about kicking goals. That’s it. It’s an interesting little game, especially for folks that love AFL. It’s actually more like Paper Toss than any other sports game I’ve played on a mobile device, and that’s a good thing.
