Guacamelee!: The Kotaku Review

On it’s own, nostalgia isn’t worth a whole lot. It takes a truly special game like Guacamelee! to make you realise why you became nostalgic to begin with.

In the video review above, I talk about the experience of playing the artsy retro-throwback Guacamelee!, what it does right and why you should play it.

Guacamelee!

Charming, fun and visually stunning, Guacamelee is a love song to the games we were weaned on that does the source material justice.

Developer: Drinkbox Studios
Platforms: PS3 (reviewed), PS Vita
Released: April 9
Type of game: 2D action adventure
What I played: the main game, dabbling occasionally with side missions

Two Things I Liked

  • The world is visually stylish, gorgeous and well-realised.
  • The combat evokes old-school tropes while innovating and improving on them.

Two Things I Didn’t Like

  • Jokes are occasionally corny and a tad obvious.
  • I sometimes wished the layout of the game felt more organic.

Made-to-Order Back-of-Box Quotes

  • “Finally, a meta, Dia De Los Muertos themed Metroidvania game that gets it right for a change.” — Chris Person, Kotaku
  • “If you’re looking for an old-school challenge that doesn’t punches, this Juan’s not for you. (I’m so sorry).” — Chris Person, Kotaku
