On it’s own, nostalgia isn’t worth a whole lot. It takes a truly special game like Guacamelee! to make you realise why you became nostalgic to begin with.
In the video review above, I talk about the experience of playing the artsy retro-throwback Guacamelee!, what it does right and why you should play it.
Guacamelee!
Charming, fun and visually stunning, Guacamelee is a love song to the games we were weaned on that does the source material justice.
Developer: Drinkbox Studios

What I played: the main game, dabbling occasionally with side missions
Two Things I Liked
- The world is visually stylish, gorgeous and well-realised.
- The combat evokes old-school tropes while innovating and improving on them.
Two Things I Didn’t Like
- Jokes are occasionally corny and a tad obvious.
- I sometimes wished the layout of the game felt more organic.
