In South Korea, League of Legends is popular — perhaps the most popular game at the country’s net cafes. That’s both a good thing and a bad thing. What makes being popular a bad thing?
For starters, the League of Legends server always seems to be under maintenance. Last night, for example, LoL underwent emergency maintenance until 5am in South Korea. But, that’s nothing new; here is how April is shaping up so far:
4/9 – unable to log in; server unavailable; website loading slowly; unable to recharge RP.
4/7 – server unstable; Riot force changes minimum number players in a room from one to two temporarily; game client download issue; unscheduled emergency maintenance for three hours.
4/6 – unable to log in; connection error at lobby; website loading slowly; unscheduled emergency maintenance for 90 mins.
4/5 – server unstable; web server crashing; unscheduled emergency maintenance for three hours.
4/4 – delayed log in; unable to log in again; delayed game loading, website loading slowly.
March wasn’t much better than April. For at least twelve days last month, the server was either slow or unstable. This lead to unscheduled emergency maintenance and patching.
One of the reasons why League of Legends is so popular in South Korea is that the game has traditionally been user-friendly. But the recent problems are becoming so frequent that many players are angry, lashing out at Riot Games, and calling server issues “a weekly event”.
A rep from Riot Games’ Korean branch told the tech site DelighIT.net that there was a problem with the game’s database and that instability issues were due to large numbers of players streaming in. The spokesperson added that Riot Korea is determined to make the LoL servers stable.
Nothing worse than wanting to play a game and not being able to do just that.
