This 8-Bit Celebration Of a 90s Childhood Makes Me Feel Really, Really Old…

This is how I know I’m getting old: the generation below me is starting to get nostalgic for their childhood. This video is like a perfect representation of that…

I was born in 1981, so technically most of my childhood took place in the 80s. The 80s are well represented in this well-made video (with a pretty average song) but it’s definitely skewed towards the 90s. Most of this stuff happened when I was a surly teenager squeezing spots in the bathroom mirror.

As cool as this video is there’s something a little dreary and depressing about it. It’s quite dark and sort of encourages us to just pretend we’re children forever and disappear into a weird dark room surrounded by posters of Michelangelo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I don’t really know if that’s for me. Look, I loved The Never Ending Story as much as the next guy but I don’t know if I, as a grown man, want to keep pretending to ride Falcor.

I guess nostalgia isn’t what it used to be.

[Sigh]
