I never thought I’d find a rock opera based on Super Mario Brothers exciting. It turns out I was wrong.

We went and saw The Mario Opera — the absurdist brainchild of singer/songwriter Jonathan Mann that had a one-night revival at Joe’s Pub earlier this month. In the video above, we talk to Jonathan about the project, his inspirations and the shared culture of Super Mario.

Oh, also there’s a turtle playing a killer sax solo. Seriously, what more could you want?
