The remastered mobile version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 arrives on iOS and Android today, bringing with it a zone famously scrapped during the original game’s development — the Hidden Palace Zone is hidden no more.
Along with upgraded widescreen graphics and a new Boss Attack Mode, Sega’s remastered Sonic the Hedgehog 2 gives fans their first chance to run through the Hidden Palace level of the game. The Hidden Palace was originally developed as a special zone where Sonic would travel after collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds to transform into Super Sonic, but the game was changed to give him that ability from the start, so the level was scrapped.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is available today on iTunes and Google Play for $2.99.

Dood, between this & the new 3DS eShop remakes, Sega’s really working hard.
All I need now is Shenmue HD & I’ll be set 😀
All we need is Shenmue 3 and translated Yakuza 5. Then I’ll be set.
God. Looking at the screenshot, I can still her the sound effects and the music I can remember.
I think its been a good 15 years or so since I last heard the theme to Hidden Palace, but it entered my mind the second I started reading this. It blows me away that I can still remember it so exactly after so long!
No not the hidden place theme. Thr first stage theme lol heard it so many times.
This re-release is absolutely superb! Top-notch stuff by Sega here!
Amazing re-master, picked it up for my Nexus 7 fhd today. Just like the first re-issue, the amount of improvements are staggering. New 60fps special stage is particularly awesome. My mind is blown – I didn’t think I could love Sonic 2 anymore than I already did!
