Frostbite’s April Fools’ Joke Is Mean

Frostbite’s April Fools’ Joke Is Mean

There are a lot of awful pranks and unfunny jokes out there today, but this one might be the weirdest: the official Twitter account for Frostbite — EA’s proprietary video game engine — is acting like a big ol’ bully.

See, EA is on the long list of publishers that no longer makes games for Nintendo’s Wii U, as their powerful Frostbite 3 engine just won’t support it . So the folks behind Frostbite are making jokes… about running it on Wii U.

UPDATE: Whoever runs the Frostbite account has deleted the tweets, but we still have them here:

Frostbite now runs on the #WiiU since it is the most powerful Gen4 platform, our renderer is now optimised for Mario and Zelda.

Frostbite will power #HalfLife3, coming out summer 2014! #WiiU exclusive.

Good news, we have finally fixed and optimised our ‘netcode’. Uses quantum entanglement for Zero Latency connections. Exclusively on #WiiU.

Man, what a bummer. These aren’t even funny — just kinda cruel. They’re picking on the weakest kid in class. Maybe Nintendo should tweet something like “Hey guys, Battlefield 4 is working today. APRIL FOOLS.”

  • Lol poor nintendo, lukcy they are doing well in the handheld department though

  • Jeez they could have made a vita joke to mix it up a little. No need to be this cruel to Nintendo fans.

    • Not sure about cruel as much as it is just lame.

Good jokes are ones that make you scratch your head wondering if they’re real. This is just shit.

    • WiiU CPU is weaker than X360/PS3, but it has a better GPU than 360/PS3 meaning that games definitely have the potential to look better on WiiU. The problem is that Frostbite is the game engine, so needs CPU.

  • Is this the first time they’ve actually acknowledged the netcode is an issue? Also, wtf is Gen4?

    • Actually, it’s a spit in the face of anyone who believes their netcode has issues; they’re implying that the only way to fix it is quantum entanglement instead of knowing what the fuck they’re doing.

Also, trying to conflate complaints about shit netcode with unrealistic demands for 0 latency, which is NOT the same thing, but to them 0 latency and basic fucking competency might as well be the same impossible thing.

  • “Hey guys, Battlefield 4 is working today. APRIL FOOLS.”
    Hahahha, now THAT is funny!

  • I played a 64 player Naval Strike map on PC last night. After it being delayed to fix same major problem and it still rubber banding ever third step, I felt like a April Fool

  • I found the Wii one pretty funny. It pretty much plays off what we were all thinking. The netcode one is a bit bs though, I don’t think the company has sufficiently made up for that one yet, to be allowed to make fun of it.

    • I guess the netcode one is kind of a tacit admission that EA is a complete failure on that front. Would be nice if they started offering refunds for BF4.

      • Nah, I read it as a snarky bit of sniping at the constant complaints at what they think is clearly nothing. They’re making out like the complaints are asking for 0 latency, and that the only way their netcode could be any better is through quantum entanglement. It’s pretty much implying that legitimate complaints are unjustified whining.

        • Yeah, you’re right.

I guess with the Wii comments, EA doesn’t owe Nintendo anything. However, they are basically dismissing legitimate complaints from their customers. Kind of bullshit.

  • “Update: THEY DELETED THEM BUT WE STILL HAVE THEM! Bubble, bubble, drama stew!”

No “Update: There’s been an official apology made by the guy in charge”, though.

  • I find it funny how Bad Company 2 was used for the title image instead of Battlefield 4. Kotaku also thinking BC2 is much better than BF4?

    • As much flak that EA gets, both justifiably and otherwise for it practices and such, I would still buy the hell out of Bad Company 3 if EA ever made it. Literally the last fun Battlefield game I’ve played

      • Agreed. Hell, I had a much better time in BF3 on my old PC that ran it at 30 in a tiny window than my 1080p 30fps capable new laptop

  • Ha ha . Funny thing is all the frostbite engine does is make their turds ( games ) really shiny . Mario & Zelda will still be better to play with near to no glitches . Now THAT’S funny !

  • I didnt find it funny. But i didnt find half of the “classic” jokes made yesterday funny either. April fools is like the unfunniest day of the year.

In saying that though, harden up. Who cares. It was a bad joke… a dime a dozen on April 1.

  • It’s a meta joke. you’re not supposed to laugh at EA poking fun at Nintendo, you’re supposed to laugh at EA having the gall to make a joke about anything related to games or engines working properly

  • Its april fools joke, who gives a shit if its good, bad or mean. people blew up in an autistic rage for nothing.
