Minecraft is getting a story, and it will be told through the lens of a narrative-driven game by Telltale.

Minecraft: Story Mode won't lay down the groundwork for any official lore, Mojang has said, but it will include characters and themes from the Minecraft universe.

Here's the announcement from Telltale:

Minecraft: Story Mode will be an all-new narrative-driven game series developed by Telltale in collaboration with Mojang. Set in the world of Minecraft, the series will feature an original story, driven by player choice. It will not be an add-on for Minecraft, but rather a separate stand-alone product that will premiere in 2015 on consoles, computers and mobile devices.

Telltale's game series will mix new characters with familiar themes, in an entirely original Minecraft experience, inspired by the Minecraft community and the game that continues to inspire a generation.

It's being developed predominantly by Telltale, but Mojang has said that they and their community members will also have some amount of input to contribute. Like Telltale's other games — The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, and, most recently, Game of ThronesMinecraft: Story Mode will be told through a series of episodes. But, as you will learn through an interactive dialogue on Mojang's blog, it won't be anything about Steve:

It will be out for Xbox consoles, PlayStation consoles, PC, Mac, iOS and Android some time next year.

You know, I scoffed when I heard Telltale were making a story-driven Borderlands game, and when it game out people were talking about it being one of the best yet.

So I'm going to reserve judgement.

Tales is great. As is Game of Thrones. At this point - I really think Telltale spend more time licensing out their engine than having any clout to impact narrative. Most of the IP holders have done well to keep a grasp on their own stories. I don't really 'do' Borderlands, and I certainly can't get enthusiastic about Minecraft, but I'll be first in the queue to grab this effort.

Perhaps it's more indicative of my need to play games that require very little thought. The rocking chair, shotgun, and "Get off my lawn" attitude can't be far away ...

Telltale seems these days to only choose to do their games for things they are passionate about. I think that really helps them in that you can feel the love and effort they put into the final product. I imagine at this point they have people knocking down their doors asking them to do licensed games for them.

Though still I would love for them to do an engine upgrade.

I dunno, this seems to be a "jumping the shark" type moment, but you know I could be wrong

include characters and themes from the Minecraft universe.

They've pretty much run out at this point, haven't they?

Well now they're just fucking with us.

    ...It'll probably be brilliant.
