Nintendo Boss Says Zelda Netflix Rumours Weren’t True

Last month, the world freaked out over rumours that Nintendo was working with Netflix to create a live-action TV series based on The Legend of Zelda. Today, the guy who runs Nintendo says those rumours aren’t true.

The buzz started back in February, when the Wall Street Journal reported that Netflix was in the “early stages” of making a Zelda TV series that the paper described as “Game of Thrones for a family audience.” Everyone went nuts, of course — what would it look like? Could they really pull off a series like that without making it seem impossibly dumb? Would Link talk?

But alas, it may not be happening. In a new interview published today by Time Magazine, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata shot down the WSJ report. Says Time:

In early February, the Wall Street Journal reported that Netflix was developing a live-action series based on Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda franchise. But Mr. Iwata says those rumours are inaccurate.

“As of now, I have nothing new to share with you in regard to the use of our IPs for any TV shows or films, but I can at least confirm that the article in question is not based on correct information,” says Iwata.

Of course, Nintendo has a habit of denying things that then turn out to be totally true. Back in 2012, the Japanese newspaper Nikkei reported that Nintendo would be releasing a second, larger version of the 3DS. Nintendo waved off the Nikkei report, calling it “speculation” — and then, just a few months later, they released the 3DS XL.

Maybe the WSJ article was “not based on correct information” because it’s actually a live-action Tingle series?
