We Happy Few: The Basics

We Happy Few: The Basics

What is it? We Happy Few, a first-person survival game where you play as a stranger in the unnaturally happy town of Wellington Wells.

Who is making it? Compulsion Games, the folks who made shadow-centric puzzle-platformer Contrast.

Here’s a trailer…

Did we play it? Yes at PAX East 2015. Here’s a video with designer/creator Guillaume Provost that shows off the first few minutes of the game.

Anything stand out about it? Many popular games in the survival genre start you off naked. No clothes, no house, no food… that’s the norm. We Happy Few is different. You start off dressed to the nines in fine, 1960s mod-fashion attire and have an abandoned underground shelter as an initial base. But to get what you really need to subsist over a multi-day span, you’re going to need to break into other people’s houses and steal things. Those are big no-nos in Wellington Wells and people who don’t conform get beat to death..

Got a fun detail? Provost says that We Happy Few draws inspiration from famous dystopian novels Brave New World and 1984 among other sources.
