An official instruction sheet featuring a meaty list of level, team and fun packs coming to the toy-driven LEGO Dimensions proves once and for all that my wallet is truly fucked come September.
While briefly-appearing Walmart ads had me sceptical, there’s no arguing with official LEGO instruction sheets. For some strange reason the LEGO Group uploaded the instruction sheet for set 71201 (via Brickset) — the Back to the Future Level Pack — which is about two pages of assembly instructions and the rest a catalogue of things to come.
First and most surprising are the first two level packs, which feature characters, scenery and their own interactive levels to play in. There’s a Portal 2 pack, which comes with LEGO Chell, a LEGO Turret and LEGO Companion Cube. I did not see that coming — I figured the Walmart leak was some sort of stupid mistake. Then again, Portal is getting its own pinball table soon, so why not?
And the Doctor Who level, well that’s a must-buy, with a tiny TARDIS, the robot dog K-9 and Peter Capaldi, the latest incarnation of the Doctor. I knew Doctor Who LEGO was coming, but I didn’t expect it to be a part of a video game too.
Not as surprising but still quite nice are the Back to the Future and The Simpsons level packs. LEGO versions of both properties already exist, so their inclusion in the game is much more close-fetched, which is an actual term people use who says it isn’t?
Then come the team packs, which I am guessing are geared towards two-player fun. I’ve already purchased several Jurassic World full-size LEGO kits, so I what’s a couple more bucks on the pile?
That is one sad-looking Scooby-Doo though.
Finally we have the fun packs, which are packs filled with fun. We’ve got three Ninjago sets, three Lord of the Rings, three Chima (the animal dealies), Krusty the Clown, the Wicked Witch and Unikitty from The LEGO Movie, because she’s awesome.
That’s a pretty big shopping list, and it’s still several sets short of what was listed during the game’s initial announcement. Throw in some more The LEGO Movie sets, some DC Comics stuff and whatnot, and I’m broke come September 29.
Good thing we’re not getting new Skylanders and Disney Infinity games at the same time…

Saw the prices of all this in the shops and let out a big ‘OH HELL NO.’
169.95 for the base game? 50 bucks per level kit? 25 bucks per mini fig? Someones kidding themselves that’s for sure…
I mean, prices are bad enough for Skylanders figures and Disney infinity figures at 17 bucks each, but you at least just wait til they’re 12 bucks each… this is just shockingly overpriced.
I guess when they decide on pricing, they go like IT PRINTS MONEY!
I’ve not played any of these games (Skylanders or Infinity) but could someone tell me what’s the difference between these and paying for extra characters via DLC?
You get a physical figure and later iterations of the games support those figures so far instead of having to rebuy them thankfully. I have to admit, the actual physical figures you get are pretty neat in Skylanders and Disney infinity.
The collector in me absolutely wants to buy stuff like that, but the cynic in me is telling me that it’s not worth it and it’s the latest fad in the industry that will quickly become over-saturated. Maybe one day I’ll give in, but the cynic is keeping a tight hold on my wallet so far
How does the new version of the game work? For instance since Infinity 3.0 is coming out soon, should I just buy that instead of 2.0? And what happens if I have 2.0, does that mean I can’t access the new figures and game content?
Disney Infinity Characters are not backwards compatible, but are forwards compatible.
All the content that the figures require is locked on the disc until that figure is on the base station.
They are building in a Kart Racer to 3.0, so yeah if you haven’t taken the plunge wait.
Lower characters seem to be restricted to Toy Box mode so the 1.0 Monsters Inc set can’t be used in 2.0, but the Characters can sort of be used. According to Unsubstaniated Rumours they want to change this so the most recent version is 100% compatible with the older things. For example they intend to add more Marvel stuff so all the 2.0 Marvel figures will work in what appears to be a very Star Wars themed game.
Disney Infinity 3.0 is releasing in Fall (our spring), so between September and November and Skylanders games traditionally launch in early October, so I’m pretty sure you’re being sarcastic there.
That said, even though the sets for this appear to be more expensive than DI and Skylanders I’m keen as mustard for it, just the idea of being able to have Homer Simpson drive the DeLorean and other such cross-franchise shenanigans is awesome.
So glad I gave up on Skylanders because now I’ve got a new franchise to collect figures for as well as Disney Infinity and Amiibo.
Can’t wait for September 29th, I’m gonna be so broke.
Doctor Who?
Crap. There goes any resistance I had against buying this.
I have no idea what this is all about (olllld lady coming through), but dang, lookit that cute little raptor buddy.
Didn’t buy skylanders. Didn’t buy Disney infinity. But I’m buying this simply because of the Simpsons.
Portal is pretty flipping awesome but Doctor Who did it for me. My wallet is doomed
So far I’d been thinking that LEGO Infinity was pretty cool, but never saw myself buying into it. But then you said Portal and Doctor Who. Now I really want it.
Then I saw weresmurf’s comment on pricing and my heart sank.
Why are you all toying with my emotions so?
(note, pun unintended)
I really want this but I have my heart and wallet set on Rock Band 4 and Disney Infinity 3.0 this year. Oh well there is always Christmas/New Year and End of Financial Years Sales.
