Everything Coming To Netflix, Stan, Amazon And Foxtel This August

Image: Lifehacker

While neither Stan nor the Australian Netflix library has anything near the range of US streaming services, every month we get just a little more. Foxtel is also adding a huge number of popular titles to its on-demand streaming, and Amazon Prime is releasing its line up of original series on Prime. Read on to see all the content that will be added to their libraries during the month of August.

Netflix

Netflix is going into August with a number of anticipated original series. First up, Netflix's stable of Marvel heroes unites to form The Defenders. We're also getting the rehash of a classic with the TV adaptation of Stephen King's The Mist, or an adaptation of an altogether different type of classic — Death Note.

Here are some of the highlights:

Marvel's The Defenders

It will take an epic team of heroes to save New York City. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage come together as The Defenders.

The Mist

A town is engulfed by a mysterious fog that conceals terrifying visions and deadly creatures in this new horror series based on Stephen King's story.

Death Note

Intoxicated by the power of a supernatural notebook, a young man begins killing those he deems unworthy of life. Based on the famous Japanese manga.

Moana

In Ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the Demigod Maui reaches Moana's island, she answers the Ocean's call to seek out the Demigod to set things right.

Stan

Stan is revealing a new original show this month with Matt Okine's The Other Guy. Twin Peaks continues to air on Mondays, along with Stan mainstays like Preacher and Younger airing weekly episodes. We're also getting a new series to Stan with Black Sails seasons 1 and 2, for anyone keen to binge a little swashbuckling action.

The Other Guy

Created by and starring leading Australian comedy talent, Matt Okine, The Other Guy is a funny, raw and poignant look at break-ups in the modern age and at the harsh reality of recovering from heartbreak. Okine stars as AJ Amon, a successful radio host who finds himself unexpectedly back in the dating pool for the first time in a decade, after discovering his long-term girlfriend has been having an affair with his best friend.

Black Sails:

The rollicking pirate adventure, Black Sails, centres on the tales of Captain Flint and his notorious crew fighting for the survival of New Providence Island. From Executive Producer Michael Bay, and co-starring Australia's Luke Arnold as Long John Silver

Twin Peaks:

Directed entirely by David Lynch, the 18-part limited event series picks up 25 years after the inhabitants of a quaint northwestern town were stunned when their homecoming queen Laura Palmer was shockingly murdered. Twin Peaks is written and executive produced by series creators David Lynch and Mark Frost.

Arrival

Named by many critics as 'the best film of 2016'. When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team — led by expert translator Louise Banks (Amy Adams) — races against time to decipher their intent.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video is finally available in Australia, and this month we're getting Amazon's original show Comrade Detective new on Amazon Prime Video.

Comrade Detective:

Comrade Detective is a one-of-a-kind cop show and comedy set in 1980’s Romania. True to its nostalgic inspiration, the series is presented in Romanian and dubbed in English — as a Romanian show of that time would have been.

Foxtel On Demand

With Foxtel On Demand, you can stream shows any time you want (surprisingly) although the shows have to be a part of your package already (say, the Drama package if you want to watch Game of Thrones). Here are some of the highlights:

Game Of Thrones:

Game of Thrones continues throughout August, with episodes arriving on Mondays. The popular series, Thronecast season 7 will also air in August live and On Demand, with each episode recapping the prior day’s episode of Game of Thrones season 7.

Top of the Lake: China Girl

Crime drama Top of the Lake: China Girl explores the mysterious circumstances behind the discovery of an unidentified body of a girl who surfaces on Sydney’s Bondi shore and stars Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men, The Handmaid’s Tale), Nicole Kidman (Big Little Lies) and Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones).

Casual

Casual follows bachelor Alex Cole as he finds himself moving in with his newly divorced sister Valerie and her teenage daughter as they all navigate the tricky world of dating and relationships. Season three joins the first two seasons already available on Foxtel On Demand.

Ray Donovan

Ray Donovan stars Liev Schreiber as a complicated fix-it man for LA’s rich and famous. He’s the go-to guy that makes ‘problems’ disappear for athletes, celebrities and anyone can afford his services; but, Ray’s past is constantly haunting him along with a troubled family and an unpredictable father. Obligatory "where the f*ck is season 2 of The Expanse" post.

Yes, Where is The Expanse season 2 (it was supposed to be July 2017) T_T

Holy crap, did Foxtel Play just add the entire James Bond catalogue?

Amazon Prime obviously doesn't care about retaining subs.

While neither Stan nor the Australian Netflix library has anything near the range of US streaming services, every month we get just a little more.

I once held the hope that little by little, Netflix would catch up with its US counterpart's amount of content, but really, almost just as much stuff leaves Netflix AU as it comes into it. The total amount of content seems to be pretty steady within the "fraction of US Netflix" tier.
