Those old men of Marvel, y’all. They never quit. The Old Man Logan timeline is a bleak one, full of near-apocalyptic death and crowded out by triumphant evil. Now, with a new prequel comic, it might be getting a bit more heroism in its history.

Announced by the New York Daily News, Old Man Hawkeye, written by Daily News reporter Ethan Sacks and illustrated by Marco Chechetto (Star Wars: Captain Phasma), will be a 12-issue miniseries premiering this January. Taking place five years before the events of the original Old Man Logan, it will feature a version of Hawkeye, still with his sight, going on one last heroic journey. In the original book, written by Mark Millar, Hawkeye was notably without his vision, having lost it due to cataracts before meeting up with Logan. (Not that blindness stops him, in true Clint Barton fashion, from being a helluva shot with an arrow.)
“In this story, he’s losing his vision and that sort of forces him to confront something really horrible that happened to him personally 45 years ago, and go on his own hero’s journey while he still can,” Sacks told the Daily News. “It’s very much like a ticking clock that’s forcing him into action.
This book is of a piece with an ongoing interest in modern Marvel with the world of Old Man Logan that Millar first created. The actual character of Old Man Logan currently exists in the primary Marvel Universe, having survived the events of Secret Wars and made his way into the main timeline as a result. Likewise, the most recent Wolverine movie, Logan, draws heavily from Millar’s original story.
The first issue of Old Man Hawkeye goes on sale in January, and will be the second Marvel story by Ethan Sacks, who penned an eight-page backup story about the Daily Bugle in the third issue of last year’s Secret Empire: Brave New World book. Check out the cover for the first issue below.
