What was once Titanfall 3 has become Apex Legends, the free-to-play battle royale game that launched today. In other words, a third Titanfall is not currently in development, despite the critical acclaim for the first two.
At a press event for Apex Legends, Respawn producer Drew McCoy told Eurogamer that Titanfall 3 wasn’t happening.
“The world thinks we’re making Titanfall 3 and we’re not – this is what we’re making,” he said. “To try and convince a sceptical audience for months with trailers and hands-on articles, we’re just like, ‘Let the game speak for itself’ – it’s the most powerful antidote to potential problems. We’re doing a free to play game, with essentially loot boxes, after we were bought by EA, and it’s not Titanfall 3. It’s the perfect recipe for a marketing plan to go awry, so why have that – let’s just ship the game and let players play.”
It’s one hell of a revelation, as we learned that Titanfall 3 was indeed in development during the fall of 2017, when publisher Electronic Arts purchased Respawn for many millions of dollars.
At the time, as I reported this past Saturday, a source told me that the third Titanfall was under way and that the studio was looking to get it out as quickly as possible, for fear of it looking and feeling dated if it came out too much later than 2018 (thanks to its use of the Valve-created Source engine). I speculated that either A) this was a stopgap en route to a proper Titanfall 3 or B) whatever work was done on Titanfall 3 has become Apex Legends.
The answer, it appears, is B, which will come as sad news to anyone who thought Titanfall 2‘s campaign was as brilliant as Kotaku did.

Another EA success story!!
F
God fucking damn it.
tbh I kind of expect them to say it, I mean why confirm a game is in development when you’ve just launched a game in the same franchise
the focus is APEX now, doesn’t make a whole lot of PR sense to go “yea but we also have titanfall 3 in the works”
Another game ruined by EA.
Titanfall 2 was simply one of my favourite games.
It is disappointing but if it means they can work more on the new star wars game then it might not be a bad thing.
Because there’s absolutely no chance EA would cancel yet another Star Wars game…
There is a very high chance especially given EA’s past. But maybe less of a chance if budgets aren’t spread across 3 games instead of 2.
EA are capable of learning, yes – the problem is what they tell themselves the lesson was.
“Microtransactions are doing alright in that F2P game… clearly it’s time to shove them back into our full-price launches!”
Starwars battle royal? :/
That could actually be quite cool if it was like the duels in Jedi Knight.
For anyone that hasnt played the titanfall 2 campaign go grab it cheap at any eb games or borrow a friends it is well worth it
I call bullshit.
Good luck with your free to play game with lootboxes…..that’s a pass from me.
Titanfall 3 would have been an instant buy.
Being honest, I’m averaging a loot box a match, about 6 hours will likely net you enough to unlock one of the 2 not unlocked characters.
Not much different to Overwatch really.
So I played Apex Legends just now, and it’s… fine enough, I guess.
Unfortunately it lacks a solos mode, and you can’t disable voice chat at all, which is an absolute dealbreaker for me, so I won’t be going back to it until those problems are fixed.
If they turned Titanfall 3 into this due to the aging engine, I wouldn’t be surprised if they soon start working on Titanfall 3 again, probably on Frostbite. Won’t see it until next-gen, which is fine.
I play Titanfall 2 for the multiplayer so I’m really happy with this!
EAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
The least they could have done was keep the Pilot mechanics, but nope. Just another generic shooter. Titanfall was special…
So there’s no pilot-specific classes anymore? I mean, I’m honestly going in on it because Dat Movement, but the classes were great.
Wall-run, shotgun, jump, slide, double jump, wall run, fly kick is The Best Thing.
No wall running apparently, basically just a shitty COD gameplay ripoff now
I played it last night. Shooting feels good and the UI is good. Art style is really nice.
Movement feels nice for a normal shooter and the traversal is quite natural feeling. It’s much slower than TF, but that’s ok.
The classes have quite different powers that feel balanced enough that nobody is objectively better and strong enough to be useful without feeling like they’re the focus of the combat.
Monetisation system seems less egregious than I would have expected from EA.
Overall it seems pretty good. If I had friends who played it I might even keep playing.
For me, Titanfall 2 was better than every CoD and Battlefield since then. Another ridiculously wasted gaming franchise in the hands of the glorious EA.
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
“I know lets take everything that made our game any good and remove it”
“brilliant idea!”
this is the absolute worst gaming news from the past 12 months. Respawn delivers a totally unoriginal game nobody asked for while confirming a successor to one of the best multiplayer games of this console generation (I’m probably biased but holy shit TF2 was amazing online) doesn’t exist.
Geeeetttttttt in the bin. Ruined my day. My week. Here I was, holding out for TF3, thinking it would be released with renewed perspective on release schedules with a dedicated community and more of the same lovable shoot/fly/skid/robotsmash/upgrade/mid-airmelee’d loop we’ve all come to adore, honed to impossible perfection. But now we have EA’s soulless, demo-tested, marketing-department approved, share-holder-ok’d, limp-mode-mobility competitor to Blackout.
Coooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool.
MY HECKIN HEART.
