The New Mario & Sonic Olympics Game Lets You Play As 2D Characters

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is kicking it old school. The latest instalment of the all-star mascot competition, due out November for the Switch, adds ten sprite-based 2D events to its normal selection of 3D fare. Look at pixel Mario’s tiny legs go!

I’ve not played any of the games in Sega’s Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series. That might change with the reveal of the classic 2D events included in the latest instalment. It’s 8-bit Mario characters versus 16-bit Sonic and friends in a series of challenges giving off some serious Track and Field vibes.

Ten 2D events are included with the game.

  • 100m

  • 10m Platform (Diving)

  • 400m Hurdles

  • Gymnastics - Vault

  • Judo

  • Kayak Single (K-1) 1000m

  • Long Jump

  • Marathon

  • Shooting - Trap

  • Volleyball

If only the entire game looked like this.

That gif shows just how much better 2D Sonic is compared to 3D.

8 bit Mario against 16 bit sonic just looks weird. They should have used 16 bit Mario.

totally agree. its a weird juxtapostion

If gameplay is like the gif, and the tracks moprh into 2D mid-race, that'd be well awesome.
It looks like the best title in the series to date either way.

I haven’t really been taking notice of this one. But ok, I should be. The trailers I just watched look great. It has 30 odd sporting events and a bunch of new sports.

This has suddenly become a day one purchase. I can’t wait to play this with my kids.

Same here ferret definitely can't wait to play Mario and Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and as it turns out Mario and Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on the Nintendo is due to be out on November 8 the same day when New Super Lucky's Tale comes out on the Nintendo Switch and the fact you get to play Mario and Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in 2D that's even better.
I will definitely be picking up Mario and Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games along with New Super Lucky's Tale when both Nintendo Switch games come out on November 8.

theres such an adorable charm about sprite based graphics and this highlights how much better they can look.
Partly because they were created based of illustrations.
