CONTENT WARNING: This story discusses suicide.

Kiwi Farms – the online forum that is notorious for being a cesspit of racism, doxing, stalking and harassment – has lost its domain registrar and has been given 14 days to find an alternative.

The owner of Kiwi Farms Joshua Moon, who goes by the screen name ‘Null’, posted a lengthy message [warning: offensive content] to the website on Tuesday to make the announcement.

“I opened my Dreamhost account over 12 years ago, in April 2009, and registered my first domain name at 16 with birthday money I had saved up. Dreamhost has been the registrar of kiwifarms dot net for its entire existence,” he wrote.

“Despite the problems we’ve faced in just the recent past, and despite all the services that we’ve had to find replacements for over the years, Dreamhost has – shockingly – been the only company to not fail in their role of providing basic Internet resources without senseless moderation for that entire time. This was not an easy job for them, and from what I understand, Dreamhost had their own customer support reply template for complaints related to our domain because the volume of complaints was numerous enough to warrant it.”

For those unfamiliar with the site, it operates as a message board that has very little – if any – moderation for offensive or harmful content.

As you’d expect, this allows the absolute worst of the internet to thrive and has resulted in Kiwi Farms being implicated in the suicides of at least three people, who claim they were the target of unrelenting hate and harassment by users.

Not to mention, in March 2019, Kiwi Farms republished both the livestream of the Christchurch mosque terrorist attack and the manifesto of the person behind it.

Following the attack, Moon refused to hand over data and posts related to the attack to New Zealand Police, deeming the request “censorship.”

However, it wasn’t until the third and most recent suicide allegedly linked to the site that its domain registrar has finally decided to distance itself from Kiwi Farms.

“Despite no evidence what so ever of any harassment towards Byuu, or even a confirmation of Byuu’s suicide, the coordinated harassment campaign led by Hector Martin against Cloudflare and Dreamhost has yielded positive results in that Dreamhost is no longer our domain registrar. This sets an incredibly dangerous precedent and walks the Internet further down the path of oblivion. More of the Internet’s underpinnings are consolidating, and what few companies remain independent are becoming more worthless and pussified by the minute.”

As a result, Moon has been given 14 days to find a new registrar for the website.

“Despite this shortcoming, Dreamhost has given me 14 days to move my domains over to someplace else and I am working on that now,” he wrote.

There’s no suggestion that this will actually mark the end of Kiwi Farms, rather, it will likely just result in Moon having to find a more expensive registrar to host the site.

At the time of publishing, it appears Kiwi Farms has found a temporary home with Cloudflare.

  • “Following the attack, Moon refused to hand over data and posts related to the attack to New Zealand Police, deeming the request “censorship.””

You phrase it as though they had any involvement; they didn’t. People game varying degrees of distasteful commentary and edits, but there was no involvement whatsoever with terrorism.

“For those unfamiliar with the site, it operates as a message board that has very little – if any – moderation for offensive or harmful content.”

Why should it be moderated? Are you going to use it if it’s moderated? What benefit to the userbase comes from moderating mere gossip just because the public individuals being gossiped about don’t like it? Threats of violence are taken very seriously and reported to the FBI.

“As you’d expect, this allows the absolute worst of the internet to thrive and has resulted in Kiwi Farms being implicated in the suicides of at least three people, who claim they were the target of unrelenting hate and harassment by users.”

Chloe Sagal never said anything regarding Kiwifarms in the leadup to her unfortunate and tragic self-immolation; to use a person’s suicide to advance one’s cause by ‘attributing’ it to something else is disgusting.

The website isn’t organising harassment campaigns on anyone its users decide to talk about, and actively moderates attempts to do so. It’s not like you just make a thread on someone and then, bam, instant personal harassment army.

It is, quite literally, just talking about weird people on the internet and discussing whatever findings come out of them.

    • You missed out the quote ‘the online forum that is notorious for being a cesspit of racism, doxing, stalking and harassment’.

Which sounds like a home for the keyboard cowards everyone is pretty much sick of on the internet and not ‘just talking about weird people on the internet and discussing whatever findings come out of them.’

      • Why would I care about people making fun of weirdos like Milo Yannopolio or Ethan Ralph, who are responsible for fanning the flames of GamerGate? Are you actually dying on the hill of defending such despicable people?

        • Or child abusers like Susan Schofield (drugged her kids so badly they suffered permanent brain damage), where Kiwifarms saving her videos was what got her kids taken off her. They might be a pack of arseholes, but without them Schofield would still be abusing her youngest son.

        • I certainly don’t like some of the people they go after, but plenty of others are just people with Autism, having mental health issues or just strange hobbies that don’t affect anyone – I won’t die on a hill for the dickheads, but I will for the others.

Don’t pretend they all deserve the hate that Kiwi Farms is built on, or try to deny that they do harrass people.

    • Please, you’re expecting people to actually take personal accountability here. Why go after the actual people from the emulation scene who were responsible for Byuu’s harassment when they can go after an easy target instead, while pretending that Byuu’s “friends” weren’t also the people harassing him? It’s so much easier to deflect onto an uninvolved party than any of them take responsibility for their own actions.

    • I don’t think whether a site’s mods encourage harrassment matters – they allowed it, and still do. They know full well what their community is and know what reputation they have. Whatever Kiwi farms was (and I very much doubt it was any better) the version I know of is just spiteful, hateful and almost exclusively interested in harrassing people. If their previous host had a template for kiwifarms related complaints it’s a pretty good indication that they were the cess pit most people know it as.

I can’t fathom why anyone would defend that site.

      • I’d have more sympathy for Byuu’s case specifically if he hadn’t done a Q&A in his own Kiwifarms thread about why he changed his username and why he behaves in a certain way (in summary, to fit in with the cool kids). He was a user of the website and him doing that is what caused his page count to jump up to 13 pages prior to his note to the administrator. All of the articles on this subject conveniently leave out those easily found details that I found over a coffee.

        • So they deserved to die because? They tried to reason with the people harrassing them? What?

Even if they were a user why does that make kiwifarms any less disgusting? because they don’t play favourites in who they harrass until they literaly commit suicide?

          • That’s a prime strawman fallacy you have there (where did I say that?), when his harassment didn’t even come from Kiwifarms. It came from his own community, with the emulation scene being one of the most toxic cesspools on the internet. Again, this is the “research over a coffee” that people including you are failing. The vast majority of people in his very short Kiwifarms thread were understanding about his reasoning when he did his Q&A. You’re free to read it yourself until either page 13 or 14 where it derailed because of his emails to the owner.

Byuu flat out lied about the source of his harassment. Even if Kiwifarms was used to host the dox of other people in the emulation scene, it came from within the emulation community itself and people who knew him and his social circle. Much like how the furry community used Kiwifarms as a dumping site to expose a bunch of animal rapists in their own community. There was no targeted campaign against him from the website as some independent entity, but people who were already part of his orbit. If you’re going to comment on what happened, it always helps to know that the person you’re defending was himself part of a community and friends with members of that community who often engage in targeted harassment. So no, I’m not sympathetic. He chose to surround himself with arseholes and those arseholes then went on to post on Kiwifarms as part of their usual harassment.

    • The defence of Kiwi farms in here blows my mind.
I’m sorry to say I was on 4chan way back in the mid 2000s and even at its worst, it wasn’t kiwifarms.

  • Never heard of Kiwi Farms until Kotaku wrote something about it a little while ago… Now I need to go have a squiz… thanks for nothing
