You can argue that the Uncharted games are linear, and eliminate the need for user choice, but I’ve always believed that’s about as meaningful as criticising a roller coaster for staying on the rails. The fact of the matter is, Naughty Dog and the actors involved in Uncharted have managed to create characters I’m truly invested in, and care about – and that’s rare. In this behind the scenes video from Gamespot, actors Nolan North and Richard McGonagle talk about what it’s like being involved in the Uncharted series.
Interestingly enough, Naughty Dog’s Amy Hennig discusses how improvisation is encouraged during the motion capture process, which makes sense. Over and above performance centred games such as Heavy Rain, I’ve always felt like the stylised aesthetic of Uncharted felt most alive and convincing – and easily the most watchable.
Obviously the process used in Uncharted won’t work in every game, but we’d love to see that sort of spontaneity in other video game cut scenes.
