Did you cheer when Sony delivered that epic smackdown retort to Microsoft’s unpopular policies during its E3 press conference this year? Did you gasp at the shiny newness of The Division? Were you choked up at seeing Mega Man in the upcoming Smash Bros game? You shouldn’t have been. The hobby/medium that you’ve loved has no pulse anymore. Only one man has the spine to tell it to you straight.
Laugh if you want. But deep in your broken hearts, you know he speaks the truth. He’s been right before.
Want to see more of Zac’s work? Head over to his personal blog and game-themed site Magical Game Time. If you’re feeling commercial, you can buy prints and shirts here. He’ll be back on Kotaku with a new comic same time next month!

Nah, real video gaming died when the arcades dried up and got whored out to claw machines.
Not as much the claw machines, it’s more those photo booths.
We had arcades?
I disagree.
I think it died with the GameCube. Then lingered on with the DS. Now though? Proper dead.
I was never a Sega fan, but I do miss the Nintendo vs Sega banter that went on when I was a kid. So I sort of agree with the comic. It’s not the same these days, fanboys are excruciatingly painful to put up with. Give me Mario ripping Sonics head off any day (ah the memories)
Ah, of course! Didn’t think of that interpretation.
Not a Sega guy either, but they’re still my favourite foe.
Those were the days! I used to draw those. I was pretty good, my work was quite popular amongst the other kids, I’d do commissions for peoples’ notebooks.
These days I wonder how quickly that would’ve got me expelled/sent to counselling/raided by the police…
I loved the Gamecube though. Best controller, and some pretty great, hidden games that unfortunately not a lot of people saw the appeal in.
To me though, if I’m going to be a pretentious tit, gaming died with the 360/PS3/Wii. We just completely forgot about game design and just starting making interactive films with the illusion of challenge and fresh content.
I don’t get it.
Nope. Real videogaming died at the end of the PS2/Xbox era, at that point we were introduced to the 360/PS3 and the horrors of Day 1 DLC and pre-order bonuses that just pollute EVERY game coming out now. Sorry but at that point, games were delivered to us in full packages, albeit they would potentially get patched once every so often on the xbox, they for the most part were in FAR better, FAR more complete condition than a lot of the games on the 360 and PS3.
I loved the Dreamcast but nah, that comics not true at all. Not by a long shot.
Fools, its still very much alive, growing tentacles and getting better.
Your all so cynical, gamings stronger now then it’s ever been 🙂 It just has way more garbage floating on top but it’s still good.
The number of indie developers releasing games, DLC’s for a single game, subscription services and DRM software is too damn high!
I feel overwhelmed in this age of games…back then…truly was the best.
I miss quake 3…Unreal Tournament…etc…etc…
So more indie games is a bad thing? You don’t have to buy every indie game, but if one in ten of those games turns out to be a surprise hit then I’d say it was well worth indie developers being given a shot rather than having the industry strictly run by AAA developers.
As it stands there have been plenty of great titles lacking all of the supposedly detrimental features you don’t seem to be fond of. Great games existed back then and nothing has stopped them from existing now; you’re not forced to purchase everything on the market, so there’s nothing wrong with the increase in quantity if you know which titles to buy.
Ugh, too much cynicism and pretentiousness. Gaming is not dead in the slightest. Bad games existed back then and they still do now. As do good games.
If anything, given natural technological advancements, gaming is getting better exponentially.
I thought that was the joke… At least, certainly from the tone of the linking article here.
I must be the only one who thinks that this is the best time to be a gamer, ever.
Yes lots of titles are overly commercialised but if that’s all you play, you have only yourself to blame.
I’ve been gaming on PC since 1998 and I think it’s come a long, long way and mostly for the good. All these people with their nostalgic memories… do they REALLY want to go back to lans and play Jedi Outcast and Quake 3? Because they were fun, but nowhere near as fun as what we have now.
I agree. Been gaming since the early 90s and I think gen has given us the best crop of games ever! Really excited to see what gen 8 will give us!
Same man. Same. I have a collection of just unbelievably awesome games. I still play the classics every now and then, but more for nostalgia value. System Shock 2 is just too ugly now to really enjoy. Ditto for Deus Ex. HL2 still looks pretty nice though.
I’ve tried to play Dark Forces, Kotor and NWN a few times, but they’re just too old now. The times have moved on. Games are MORE fun now. I mean, Mass Effect 2!!!! SOOOO much better than KOTOR.
I’m willing to bet that most people here will say that video gaming died at about the same time that they became adults… Nostalgia is a powerful thing.
That’s a good point dude. Nostalgia is fun, but not good to let it take over your life.
You should hear my dad. Apparently the 70s were a golden age, where there was no murders, rapes or road rage, ever!
My PC and PS3 keep me very well entertained thank you. No Move, Kinect, Wii Wands.
Just Dual-Shock & good ‘Ole mouse & keyboard folks!
Real gaming is going strong, and there’s still plenty of games out there that are breaking new ground.
I know it’s only a comic and I HOPE you were kidding about the heart of hearts thing, but I know real people who actually think like that, annoying game-hipsters that only like old or unheard of games, proclaiming that anything popular made this century is crap.
