Been frustrated with the multiplayer matchmaking in Halo: The Master Chief Collection? Microsoft knows it’s a problem and is working to fix it.
A big part of the appeal of the Master Chief Collection was getting to experience re-mastered versions of Lockout, Blood Gulch and other classic maps from older Halo games. But finding and connecting to other players has been a frustrating affair ever since the game launched. The anthology’s developers think they have found the culprit and are working on repairing things, with a bunch of fixes coming in the next week:
Over the past 48 hours, we believe we have identified the primary matchmaking issue, and are working on a solution right now. In the meantime, we’ll be rolling out additional tweaks over the next days to further improve the experience while we ready this solution. We are monitoring the data and working on tweaks that should continue to improve your matchmaking experience while we prep. In addition, we’ll be releasing a game Content Update tomorrow that will address non-matchmaking related issues. For more details, please visit our support FAQ on our forums that is being updated in real-time: http://bit.ly/11eRtP0.
An additional measure you will see take effect today, is that we’ve decided to trim the hopper list to allow us to drive population to those that are functioning the best — this will serve to further increase the speed with which you find games. We will bring the other hoppers back online as things improve, but our primary focus right now is getting you into matches. For details on which matchmaking playlists are being temporarily taken offline, please visit our support FAQ here: http://bit.ly/11eRtP0.
We are doing everything we can on an hourly basis to improve the experience, while we work on our solution. In the meantime, we’ve found a few things looking at the data that can help you a little as well. We’re seeing successful match times from anywhere from 15 seconds to 4 minutes. 4 minutes is a long time to wait for a match, but don’t quit out too quickly as it will come. If you haven’t found a match within about 4 minutes, please exit the search and restart, as this will reset the parameters and increase the likelihood of entering a match. I realise this isn’t ideal, but it’s temporary while we sort things out.
I’d like to personally apologise to you all for the current situation. I can assure you we’re attacking this from all directions from 343 Industries to the Xbox platform, and we won’t rest until it’s what it should be. People are reporting improvements across the board, which is great, but we’re not backing down until we finish this fight.
Here’s a bit more information on what to expect next week in terms of MCC updates:
- Daily server-side tweaks to continue to improve time to get into games
- A Content Update tomorrow that addresses some campaign fixes and scoring issues
- Content Updates and server side tweaks over the next week focused on matchmaking

Was this beta tested at all?
Is it possible to LAN play with friends via a direct connection?
I will be testing it this weekend…..apparently the problem is it needs XBL to join the group but then it will use the network to play the match where ever possible, but it dosnt say which it is using? bloody silly IMO
Just a cash grab to force you to have an XBL account it would seem.
Ok. Here is the lowdown. If you are on the same network it does indeed use LAN. I have just connected both my XB1’s together into the same switch and connected the switch to my modem, which is effectively what we do at a LAN. You can see the main traffic is between the two XB1’s, but there is still a little internet traffic. When I disconnect the internet during a game it carries on for about two minutes, then I get a notice saying that I am not connected to XBL and the game drops back to the starting screen and says ‘Match Incomplete’. In short, it does LAN, but you need an XBL connection too.
Edit: Note- the internet has to be hardwired not WiFi or it wont go through the network!!!!
We are having a hall LAN in Perth NOR on the 22nd if anyone wants to come along and help test this on a larger scale.
How do you see the traffic is between the boxes and not the net?
Via the router. You can just watch the lights the two XB lights will flash in sync, the internet connection will have a lot less activity, once signed in and a match has started. Also it still lans for two minutes+ after you pull the power on the modem.
Also no LAG unlike playing online….
We are testing this on a larger scale tonight….also the hall we hired has internet.
I’m keen to hear how it works! Report back with your findings if you remember 🙂
Hopefully the servers will be back online soon to deal with this issue.
I have so far been able to join only 1 multi player game. Not only have I been trying very regular every day since it was released, but I’ve waited for at least 10 mins at times (obviously doing others things while a wait) just to see if anything happens. Nothing. I also can’t play halo 2 anniversary co-op over xboxlive. Alot of issues, I know they will get it right and they have gotten so many other things right, but I’m pretty annoyed
That free 2 day trial I got in my game for XBL was kinda wasted, thanks guys! Now I’m not even sure I want to sub to XBL. I wanted to take a test drive of the Halo multiplayer and see how it played with my internet and if I’d find many aussies. 😛
It a nutshell this game doesn’t work. It’s quite literally broken. If this was any other kind of product it’d be returned for a quick refund, but this is a video game so of course no one cares. The state this game has been released in is disgraceful, there are hordes of problems with the campaign stuff too and I find the game constantly crashing. How is this acceptable?
