Ahead of next month’s DLC, the first Rocket League patch is live, and it brings some vital fixes.
The full patch notes are available right here (if it’s not working, that’s because the developer’s website is getting hammered), but I’ll walk you through the highlights.
- “Quick Chat” commands can now be used cross-platform between PC and PS4
Most people don’t use voice chat in Rocket League because it’s not necessary, but the tiny snippets of chat — nice shot, sorry, oops — attached to the d-pad work just fine. But ever wondered why some players were so quiet? As it turns out, you couldn’t chat between PC and PS4 players!
- The first player to abandon a “Ranked’ match is now banned from matchmaking for 15 minutes
This is sooooo important. When you play an unranked game in Rocket League, the game slots in another player, even mid-match. Ranked, however, is a different story — you’re on your own. By now, everyone has probably encountered an arsehole player who decided being down two goals in the first minute was a justifiable reason to leave the game. They can still do that, of course, but they will be banned from ranked games long enough to give them something to think about.
- (PS4) Multiple visual optimizations
The frame rate doesn’t quiiiite lock at 60 frames-per-second on PS4, and have you noticed how loud your PS4 gets while playing? I can’t tell if the game is any faster from only playing two matches, but I can definitely tell you my PS4 is still loud. Keep on rocking it, PS4 fans!
Here are the other major changes, by the way:
- Quick Chat” commands can now be used cross-platform between PC and PS4
- Stat tracking for online games is now properly recorded for its correlating Garage items
- AI Bot skill levels now adjust to the average skill level of all players currently in the game
- (PS4) “Far, Far Away” Trophy can now be unlocked via online play
- (Steam) “Virtuoso” Achievement is now obtainable and includes appropriate description
- Fixed multiple crash scenarios
I should probably do some more research for this post, though, and load up the game…

This is very exciting!!
Very happy about the fixed achievement, as I’ve definitely driven over 500km, but as most of my play is online, it’s now the only achievement I’ve yet to unlock!
Kind of bummed that the PS4 is still loud, at least to this writer. Hoping it calms down at least a little. I worry for it’s health…
I was wondering why I hadn’t got the 500km+ trophy, I thought I’d racked up heaps of kilometers. Is there anyway to find out how far you’ve driven?
I can’t say I’ve noticed the PS4 noise, maybe I’m sitting too far away to notice? Hopefully it doesn’t overheat, I spend way too much time playing RL.
Only a few trophies left, the 500kms, unlock everything and play with a friend. I’m always on at the wrong time.
(I got soo excited this morning, turned on my PS4 to see the update message and thought the free DLC had landed…nope, just a few fixes. Still some nice changes in there)
You can see how far you’ve driven in the tyre menu. Each wheel shows you in the description how far you’ve gone with that wheel. But with this bug, it only shows single player drive distance!
Haha, me too. I sit very close, so that’s probably why it bothers me so much. The noise is just the fan working hard, but I often worry that something will go wrong and I’ll be without my precious console…
The Unlock Everything achievement is tricky. I had to look into it, and you can’t unlock everything until you’ve won a (possibly offline mode only) game with each car (except the Venom, I think). Unless you’ve already done that, then you just need to play until you get everything!
We’re friends on PSN, right? I’ll message you next time you’re on and we can start a party!
Ooh, I think I have a loooooong way to go until the 500kms. Just spent an entire match boosting and doing laps, but I only got around 600-700m. Hmmm, could be a while haha I did manage to unlock the bonus car, so I’m one trophy closer to a platinum.
We are friends, my PSN is Matt_3D. If I’m on, I’ll most probably be in Rocket League or Borderlands 2 🙂
Yeah, they don’t make that achievement an easy one… Hoping it pops for me once I start up the game, but it may mean I have to continue on from my single player kms… :'(
Rad! I should be on tonight checking out Rocket League stuff, so I’ll shoot you a message!
Rocket League got me out of bed this morning. I suck at it, but that shows the extent of my commitment.
I know that feeling!
don’t forget the best part of this update is that the red/blue light hat now flashes
Well this explains a shitload.

Haha, for sure. I just thought the people I was playing with were quiet jerks…
Hope they can tell the difference between a disconnect and a quit.
Call me stupid but I wasnt aware it was cross platform online!!!
