I’ve never been one for branded board games — for example, Assassin’s Creed Monopoly — but I’m going to make an exception for Z-Man Games’ upcoming Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu. And yes, it’s exactly what it says on the tin: Pandemic, but with lovely Lovecraftian bits.
Going from the breakdown by Ungeek’s Brian Papa, Reign of Cthulhu is not a simply reskin.
In fact, looking at the component list, nothing immediately jumps out as being a replacement for the disease cubes of the original game. It’s only upon closer inspection that I’m pretty sure it’s cultists — which makes sense.
A game based on Lovecraft’s works wouldn’t be complete without a sanity mechanic, and Reign of Cthulhu doesn’t disappoint. It’s hard to make out in the lead image, but you can see rules for handling sanity written on the bottom of the game board.

Then there’s the Old Ones and investigators… the latter fits in with Pandemic‘s “roles”, but I’m curious about the evil gods. Perhaps you get a random set each session, replacing the viruses of the standard game?
Anywho, I’m pumped. The Ungeek article states a “Summer 2016” release, which means sometime between June-August for us. That’s a painful wait.
