If you’re a bit sick of watching YouTube and Twitch thinking that Blizzard’s inaugural shooter is more #OnlyWatch than Overwatch, I have some torturous news for you. Blizzard are tempting everyone with another closed beta phase this weekend — and they want you to help stress the servers.
There has been a closed Overwatch beta running for a few months now, but this upcoming phase — from Saturday 2:00 AM AEST (midnight Friday AWST and 1:30 AM Adelaide) to Sunday 2:00 PM AEST — is more designed as a massive stress test.
“The objective: help us get our server hardware and technology ready for release,” the developers wrote on Battle.net.
To ensure stability, the 36-hour window will only let players play on Nepal, Route 66 and Hanamura. You’ll still have access to the entire roster of 21 heroes. Blizzard also stressed that, if you are one of the lucky ones invited into this special stress test, you’ll get routed to servers appropriate to your location.
“Note that even though you will need to select “Americas” to play during this Beta Test Weekend, once logged in you will be automatically routed to servers appropriate for your region and ping.”
To opt-in for the Overwatch beta — if you’re the only person who hasn’t by this stage — you’ll need to go to your Battle.net beta profile settings page. Alternatively, this link should do the trick as well — although you’ll have to login to your Battle.net account for either to work.
Note that this closed beta is still for PC users only, although the open beta (May 5-9) will be available for PS4 and Xbox One as well. And if you are playing on PC, here’s what you’ll need to guarantee at least 60fps:
Operating system: Windows® Vista/7/ 8/10 64-bit (latest Service Pack)
Processor: Intel® Core™ i5 or AMD Phenom™ II X3, 2.8 GHz
Video: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 660 or ATI Radeon™ HD 7950
Memory: 2 GB VRAM, 6 GB System RAM
Storage: 7200 RPM with 5 GB available HD space
